Have A Few Bucks To Help Get More Gravel For Nickelsville? Stop By Hotwire!

On Tuesday, 10 yards of gravel was delivered to Nickelsville. The gravel is needed to provide drainage and a safer walking surface for both residents and donors/volunteers.

Hotwire Online Coffeehouse has agreed to accept donations for more gravel. Gravel is about $25.00 per yard, including tax. It is estimated that another 15 - 20 yards will be needed to provide sufficient coverage for common areas and pathways.

We would like to deliver at least another 5 - 10 yards this Friday, so if you are out and about, please consider stopping by Hotwire Coffeehouse, located at 4410 California Ave SW. We can accept cash, or check. Checks need to be made payable to Glacier Northwest--who has been great about giving a discount by not charging for delivery.

    Thanks for thinking about helping!

  2. funkitoo...

thanks for working with Hotwire Coffehouse to provide a collection point for gravel for Nickelsville.

I was there just before noon and they have already moved nearly half of what was delivered yesterday.

They now have a solid pathway from the front stairs just past the first common area and are in the process of covering barkdust filled ruts with gravel.

Thank you for the update JoB.

They are going to be a tired, sore group of folks!

  4. yes, they are
    but it is clouding up
so they are also going to see what a difference that gravel makes really really soon.

We'll swing by today and drop off a check.
Drove by NV about 9:30 AM today and they were moving gravel. Industrious group. Will try to pick up the donated wheelbarrow today also.

I answered my own question by calling glacier and they can't take credit cards. So I will go to the bank and get 25.00 and drop it by hotwire on my way home tonight.

Glacier? The Chinese cement importers? Call me... I will donate a load from a more responsible, a more ethical company. JoB?

    Posted 7 months ago #
  11. kootch...

    Glacier may import chinese cement..
but i am pretty sure the gravel is local..
and they have been bending over backwards to help Nickelsville.

    that said..
Nickelsville can use more 5/8 minus gravel to raise pathways out of the mud and to put under firepits ..
so if you want to arrange a load from another company that would be wonderful.

I'm not the go to person on this one...
    just support personnel ...

but i do know that we have another load being delivered in the next couple of days and that donations for another are being made at Hotwire Coffee as we speak.

are you wanting me to give funkietoo your phone number? or do you need me to call?

    let me know.
    you have my number

    Posted 7 months ago #
  12. i was in Nickelsville early this evening and I can't tell you what a difference that first load of gravel made.. there sections of very walkable pathways laid...
i joked that all they need now are solar lights :->

  13. Thanks you guys!

And thanks to Hotwire as well!

  14. Due to GNW not being able to accept credit cards and many folks likely wanting to help/not being being able to do that other than a donation for materials/supplies as you see best: Can someone please set up a Nickelsville PayPal-type account or let us all know if this is already in place?

Also,is there any way to set up a monthly(?) local drop-off for food items/clothing/supplies? I have a donation pickup for CSB coming tomorrow that has clothing/pet supplies that I'd much rather see go to Nickelsville. Time-crunch with work and etc is lame as hell, but I still want to ask...

    Posted 7 months ago #
  15. smy..

    Glacier does accept credit cards..
but only for half to full loads ($100+ ?) i think.
they aren't set up to create a Nickelsville fund.

I think there is a Nickelsville paypal acct already...
but the money goes into the general fund, not specifically to gravel.
I think that money goes to fund things like the portable toilets

    as for the monthly pickup..
how large a load are you talking about?
there are a few of us who regularly pick things up for Nickelsville.

*perks up* I cannot help with the credit card/paypal issue, but I am certain we can arrange a way for your stuff to get to their location. Between the lot of us, just send out the word and we will arrange pick up.

We even tried to setup a bank account for this project, but there were a lot of rules around that too. Hence, the reason Hotwire Coffeehouse offered to accept cash donations.

We know it's not perfect, but hopefully folks will make it to Hotwire.

Like I previously posted... gravel I can get for free. No takers so far. Just need to know gradations required

    Posted 7 months ago #
  20. kootchman..

they can use as much 5/8 minus gravel as they can get delivered so another truckload would be much appreciated.

    Posted 7 months ago #
  21. Bring on the gravel Kootch! The last load consisted of 3/4" by 3/8" crushed with NO fines. However, I'm sure they would not turn up their nose at 5/8" minus.
    .
A "La Nina" winter is in the forecast. Everything we can do to keep these folks high and dry will help!
    .
Thanks in advance for whatever you can do!
    .
Equally important is the need for canned foods. I inspected the kitchen tent and found almost NO canned foods present. They need salt and sugar too!
    .
Did you know that a 50# bag of rice runs almost the same price as a yard of gravel!
    .
Even by itself, rice is a great source of protein, add in some beef and / or chicken, and a few veggies and NOW you have a real meal deal!
    .
There are a number of food service folks down there including at least one professional chef.
    .
These folks KNOW how to make good food!!
    .
Anyone ever hear the classic story about "stone soup." It's a great one!
    .

    .
And folks, just as a friendly reminder - lets QUIT bashing Nickelsville. My wife and I are both disabled, and without our "safety nets" such as unemployment and family help, we could BOTH be down there at NV - and ... SO COULD YOU! There are NO guarantees in life! Just think traffic accident, stroke, heart attack, etc. It COULD happen to YOU! Please take a moment and THINK about your next post regarding NV!
    .
OK, off soap box. Kootch? did you place that gravel order yet? Still plenty of time left in the business day.
    .
The property they are on is likely about 7 - 10 acres. I seriously doubt we can deliver too much gravel. Remember, this used to be a Super Fund site, with about 12 inches of clean top soil.

How many yards? May be be 5/8" clear crush... probly delivered Monday afternoon or Tues morning... thank SBSG. Qty?

    Posted 7 months ago #
  24. Kootch - how much gravel would it take to cover 7 - 10 acres at a depth of 2 - 4 inches? If we bring it, they will use it!
    .
You have seen the camp. Now they have expanded the camp to the rear of the property.
    .
Take a look and YOU be the judge. Another truckload would probably not hurt at all!
    .
Currently they have received about 25 yards as of Fridays delivery. Another 10 - 20 will probably see them fine! MORE gravel will allow them to beef up the main pathways and trails, not to mention the communal areas around the fire pits and kitchen tent areas. The security tent and Honey Buckets need gravel too!
    .
    Thank you Kootch!
    .

  25. kootch...

not more than ten yards a day...
they need time to spread it ;->

I will order ten yards on Monday morning. We will reevaluate further needs after that is distributed. Agreed all? Now go buy a great ham, sun dried tomato and some magic kinda chutney sandwich at Hotwire....for a mere $5 bucks.

So if I wanted to donate some of the above-mentioned canned foods and other kitchen items, would one of you (Debbie? Since you've already been here once, recently, to pick-up) be willing to deliver it for me? I'll plan to go shopping on Sunday morning if someone can swing by that afternoon. I may be able to find more blankets (I have a bit of an addition to buying blankets every time we go to IKEA) and Winter gear, too.

I can't swing by again until the end of next week, but if you still have it, I am more than willing to deliver.

That'd probably work even better, so I could actually do a bit of shopping around, and stretch those dollars to get them as much as possible. Will text you late next week, Debbie!

  32. Westcoastdeb and JoB,

I have some canned goods I picked up this weekend and misc clothing/blanket, pet collars, etc. Not large amounts at this point, but if you do a pickup for carrieann at the end of the week and want to add me to the list, that would be great. I'm relatively close to NV and JoB picked up some items at my house in August.

I'd like to be able to add needed items to my weekly/bieweekly grocery list and tap friends for other stuff needed to make some regular donations as able. It would be great to know items that are needed and more difficult to get otherwise (food items, clothing/blankets, toiletries, tarps/tools, kitchen implements, etc).

If you have a pickup day regularly or could let us know when you're planning a day to do that for other folks, I know I'd jam on gathering up more things to add.

    Many thanks!

  33. Joanne and Kevin,

Thank you for "Followup: Nickelsville" posted today. I wish I'd read it before my last posting, as it answered many of my questions for what's needed. It also was just simply a great insight on many levels. Thank you again.

I will gladly add you to my 'route'. I think I am going to post a thread the day before I run pick-ups, that way as many people as want to can join in.
    Thanks

The Nickelsville can cupboard is in pretty bad shape. Need things to heat and eat.I was getting stuff where I live that others didn't want but has nearly stopped. Must have their cupboards cleaned up. I save what can be used to cook with to help with our Saturday meal. They sent me home yesterday with apples and I took a huge apple crisp this evening when I took water.

Sometimes people put out clothes they don't want I get them. Have bargained shopped some but the next 2 months will be tight as I'v hit the "DONUT Hole" on my perscription insurance. Gonna cost me much more til the end of the year. Good I've saved stuff to cook with.

I do agree that the bashing should stop. Enough's enough.

As to apple picking---just anybody isn't a good picker, fruit has to be handled with care. Now they don't pick people off the streets like years ago. I know, picked some for pocket money when in High school. Used 14-16 ft ladders then. My dad said "You'd never be a good picker if you held on with one hand". Needless to say I didn't make a lot of money as I'm afraid of heights. It takes money to get to orchard country and money to live on and place to live or stay til payday. I thought about the possibility for some people from here but logic over road that idea.

Its good to know some people are doing what they can to help Nickelsville. Ive talked to some that would rather be somewhere better but can't and don't go there with intentions of long stay. They're working on things that take time and can't be rushed. I won't go into detail, not necessary. Some wait for help and some work for it. They're all appreciative and thankful for evrything we all do.

    Posted 7 months ago #
  36. westcoastdeb, thanks so much for being there to help with transporting items - I appreciate your offer! What's the best way to get in contact to arrange this? I think I live within blocks of you in Highland Park area just off 16th Ave SW.

[I hope postings about NV-bashing aren't in reference to my comment on this thread in Post #15("Time-crunch with work and etc is lame as hell, but I still want to ask..."). If so, that was meant by me as MY time crunch and not being able to take items to NV myself or do more is lame].
