I'm still fairly new to the area, so organizing a West Seattle Haitian relief effort would be quite difficult for me, but if anyone decides to do so, please contact me to help!
Another option that makes it very easy to donate via the Red Cross is to text "Haiti" to 90999.

Christy, folks I know with close ties in Haiti say that right now donations to the big orgs like Red Cross are best, and suggests people plan benefit events for when this is no longer front-page news but the need will still remain.
I also read that American Airlines is taking doctors and nurses to Haiti for free, although I have not substantiated this claim. My source says to call 212-697-9767.
Incidentally, when I went to the AA website to look it up, I found a link that says:
"If you would like to join us in supporting the victims of the earthquake in Haiti by making a cash donation, American will reward your generosity with an AAdvantage bonus mile offer. Through February 28, 2010, AAdvantage members can earn a one-time award of 250 bonus miles for a minimum $50 donation, or 500 bonus miles for a donation of $100 or more to the American Red Cross."

voodoo: Thanks for the info. I think you can also donate United Airlines frequent flier miles as well if you can't afford to give cash.
Personally, I have to say that something turns my stomach about getting something in return for helping people. We're Americans. We have SO much. Haiti is a country where people who were already desperately poor are now even worse off than they were before. Potentially half a million dead.
I'm totally OK with helping people just to help them, not so I can get something in return. But that's just me. I understand that some people might be motivated by a bonus like that. I'm just for a more pure from of philanthropy that doesn't have anything to do with what's in it for me.
Note that a couple local efforts have popped up tonight. Keller Williams in The Junction will collect donations during the Art Walk, and wash cars on Saturday

Also, White Center Full Tilt says profits Sunday will be donated to Haiti effort. Ice cream for everybody!

West Seattle Thriftway has stared a relief fund for these victims of the earthquake, and is MATCHING ALL FUNDS donated up to $3,000.

We turned last night's blurb into a permanent (for now) item adding any other West Seattle fundraisers we hear about. It'll be linked from the top of the sidebar too, as West Seattle Help for Haiti, as soon as a little technical quirk is worked out. Have added Thriftway as well as Full Tilt, WSUU, and WS Christian.
Also heard from KW (who's doing the car wash) that KING5 is picking up the story from here and coming to interview them shortly as part of a "grass roots help for Haiti" story.
Christopher, I agree, we should not need a "carrot" in front of us to donate if we are able, but it is nice that the airline is offering an incentive for their customers to make a donation, or a bigger donation than they might have otherwise.
Also, it seems the item about transporting doctors and nurses is untrue. Sorry to spread misinformation. This is just a reminder of the many scams and shams that will no doubt spread as a result of this tragedy. Be careful who you give money to!
Huffington Post has published a list of charities; most everyone can find one here that they feel comfortable giving to, I think.
