Gym recommendations?

  1. I'm hoping I can get some candid reviews about gyms in West Seattle. I have been going to the YMCA 3 days a week since January and I think it's awesome, but just not the right environment for me. I'm looking for something with, preferably, less children (love the kids but I get real finicky when I'm working out) and a swimming pool. I've heard that a swimming pool with hours available for lap swimming between 5pm and 6pm is a tall order in West Seattle.

Anyway looking for semi-quiet, mostly adult, clean and convenient. Maybe cheap? I've tried All Star in the past but have heard mixed reviews lately. Though I have to say the Emerald City Smoothie is a major bonus :)

  2. Eek. The pool requirement may be tough - only know about the Y. However, I would recommend trying out CrossFit West Seattle on Admiral Way. No pool, but you'll get an excellent workout. No cost first trial too, so you don't have anything to lose really. I've been a member since Nov and really enjoy it. Good luck.

  3. Cait,
    .
I love the Y! And I just have the Fauntleroy membership for about $50 a month. It also includes 3 visits to the West Seattle Y per month.
    .
Now if you are willing to spend more, you can get an upgrade which allows you to visit multiple Y's in the city. If you don't mind a drive on your swim days, there might be another branch with more attractive swim sessions.
    .
Or perhaps keep the Y and consider one of the many public pools in Seattle for your swim needs.

  4. Kevin - that's what frustrates me! I love the Y too. Price is right, pool available (although not when I'd like) and good equipment. To be honest I just feel out of place in the "family setting". I am a person with no kids there to just get a quiet workout and go home. I feel bad huffing and rolling my eyes when there are inevitably kids screaming and running around because really, in the term "FAMILY YMCA" I'm the odd man out.

Cait, I've had a good three months so far with 24 hour fitness. I initially signed up under a "no sign up fee" promotion for $35 a month for the Super Sport membership. This allows me access to all but the top-tier clubs. My primary club is Westwood Village, and I go to the downtown club near I-5 for swimming and more machine availability. Classes are included. Plus, they told me if there's a better promotion out within a week, they will match that. It turns out the price dropped to $29, so that's my new price.

Oh - if you want to try it out, and you happen to have a smartphone, you can "check in" to 24 Hour Fitness on Yelp and get a 10-day trial. Good luck!

All Star fitness is great. Pool. Kid center so they are not under feet. Lots of good classes. Check it out. I think they have a trial period too.

  7. Yes, yes, yes to CrossFit! :) I have been a member since August and can't imagine going anywhere else. Granted, if a pool is what you really want, the only two options in WS I know of are the Y and Allstar.

  8. Well, there are lots of kids at the Y. I think the only gyms with pools are All Star and the Y. Of course, with the Y you can go to a whole bunch of other gyms and they all have pools too.

What about joining somewhere like 24 hr fitness or Anytime fitness and then go to Southwest for swimming?

Love the Y. I have never considered any other place (but again, Our family has quite a few kids)
