Technically, not in West Seattle but so many of us go to White Center McClendon's I thought I'd mention Chemo's, formerly Del Rio. Located right behind McClendon's it's a really easy, quick bite while making a hardware run. The food is really good, reasonably priced and the service is friendly and attentive.

It's been raved here before, but updates are always good:

Thanks for the reminder. I need to hit McLendon's and will give Chemo's a try. Wonder if they have huitlacoche...it's almost that time of year.

if you can tell me where you developed your love of mexican..
i might be able to tell you where you can find great food that fits into your ideal of great mexican.hubby is a Tuscon boy...
his definition of great mexican differs greatly from that i developed on a trip to the west coast of mexico.we are both reasonably happy eating at the mexican place across from Endolyne Joes...

msm: Here's a couple of my faves..... For sit-down, family service I love La Costa in Burien, espec. Friday nights when they have a live, Mariachi band. For walk-up taco truck, La Fundita on 15th & 96th or 98th in White Center. Tacos Guaymas is my go-to in the Junction w/Puerta Vallarta a good back up.
Just my 2 cents!

@Job: as a former Tucsonan I'm with your hubby on on the Mexican restaurant dilemma. Whenever I visit Tucson I hit as many of my favorite restaurants as I can .. so much to choose from there, and so little to choose from here (it seems to me).
I haven't found anything in W.S. that I would call anything but okay. I really do like Mama's Mexican Kitchen in Belltown. Of course I haven't visited every place there is in the Seattle area, but the trend hasn't been that great so far.
Posted 7 months ago # -
So, considering the favoring of Mama's, it is TEX-MEX that you really are looking for, Rich.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Funny thing is, we should celebrate regional differences in cuisine. If I'm in Tucson, I'm not going out for sushi, or complaining about the dearth of fresh seafood restaurants.

@dawsonct: I've had Tex-Mex, like it, but no it's not what I'm really looking for when I talk about my particular tastes in Mexican food.
I do celebrate regional differences in cuisine, thank you very much, and without someone telling me I "should". One topic has nothing to do with the other.

The truck in White Center is my go to for good Mexican. For a more involved meal I really like Sabor Oaxaca in Burien, or El Paisano in White Center.
I don't mean to start a flame war here, but Mama's in Belltown is not Mexican food. It is barely food. Cheddar is not an ingredient normally found in Mexico. I know tons of people that love that place, and in the summer I do not mind their chips and beer, but if you are looking for Mexican food, it is the wrong place.

I'm not sure where they fall on the authenticity scale, but I LOVE La Carta De Oaxaca in Ballard. We never try to go on Friday or Saturday because of the long wait, even on weekdays or before the evening rush it's busy. Great food.

Cheddar is not an ingredient normally found in Mexico.
YES. THIS EXACTLY.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Traci if you like them, you really should try Sabor Oaxaca.

I find the Mexi in WS to be scarce, WC/Burien not too bad. Try Gorditos Healthy Mexican in Greenwood on 85th; Family style - Rosita's in Greenlake; and Luisa's on Holman Rd.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Second Luisa's, not Rosita's, and I don't get the devotion for Gordito's. Maybe I have ordered the wrong thing every time I have eaten there. Seems like their major selling point is excess.
Folks oughta try out El Taco Maestro, 23646 Pacific Hwy S. I am usually the only gringo whenever I am there. That's a good sign for me. That and they serve tongue, face, and goat 7 day a week.

We hit La Costa last night for the first time. We got there early and there was a line out the door when we left. Our food was yummy. Good chips and salsa. And pretty good margaritas. I'd love to hear other suggestions for good food AND margaritas. The search for both in the same place continues.

When I think of Mexican food, first things that come to mind are nachos with salsa and chimichangas.

Well, I grew up eating Tex-Mex, so I can't help it if that is my favorite. :o) I lived in Portland in the 90s, and much of the Mexican food there at the time was cooked by folks from Michoacan, and I enjoyed that, too. Also like the seafood from Veracruz. Any suggestions that would send me in those directions would be great. I'll have to follow up on a lot of the restaurants suggested here.

I've been looking for some good Mexican food as well. Unfortunately in the Junction there is only Guayamas, Beloved Mexico and Puerto Vallarta. TG is pricey for what you get. Beloved Mexico is just OK and Puerto Vallarta is the most bland tasting mexican food I've ever had. The only redeeming thing about Puerto Vallarta is the fact that it's cheap and the portions are ENORMOUS.

I am an El Paisano fan. That and the 98th/15th taco truck. When it is too wet and cold to wait for a truck order, I head inside to Paisano and cozy up to fresh chips and salsas while I watch soccer from a cushy cozy booth.
Lots of interesting menu items. I really love their pork and beef tostados. Nice char on the meat, clean simple and inexpensive!

Went to eat based on blog recommentations.
Not good.

I had a similar experience at lunch at Chemo's two weeks ago. My skirt-steak tasted like shoe leather.
Posted 3 weeks ago # -
I ate there twice last week and it was great. I guess anyone can have a bad day.

While I am not certain of its regional flavor, we really enjoyed the healthy and tasty dining in Georgetown recently at the Mexican restaurant/caterer Fonda la Catrina, 5905 Airport Way S; fondalacatrina.com -- best guacamole I've had in ages with lovely handmade tortillas (we watched them being made).

El Sabor de Oaxaca (different name on outside of building) is wonderful. They serve huitlacoche, although at this time of year it's canned. Their chorizo is delicious and unlike any other I've tried. I'm anxious to try Fonda la Catrina, just noticed it was open the other day. The La Fondita truck in White Center is a reliable source for asada burritos.

Wow, there're some strong opinions on Mexican food... Imho, there's a relatively new place place down in Des Moines that's fantastic, if you're up to making the treck. It's called Arturo's, right there on the main drag, at the intersection of 222nd. He prides himself on using fresh ingredients, and tries for supporting local food. Give it a try!
