Goodbye West Seattle

Sadly, I have had to move far away. The pull of family is strong. But in my heart, I will always be a west seattleite. I will display my "I heart WS" bumper sticker with pride in the heart of red state country. I will keep reading the WSB updates in my FB feed. And I will be jealous of all of you who live there.

Goodbye, Lincoln Park. I will miss your tall trees and long walks, the wading pool, and the eagles.
Goodbye, Alki. My boys will miss throwing rocks in the water.
Goodbye, La Rustica. We were sad you were closed on our last night in town. For 10 years we've gone whenever we could, and were always happy. We've tried to replicate the lamb shank with some success but will continue to pine for the real thing.
Goodbye, Morgan Junction Thriftway. We spent way too much money enjoying our neighborhood grocery store, and have no regrets. I dream of the breakfast burritos.
Goodbye, Olympics view. Coming home will never be as awesome without topping the hill to the day's vista, whether cloudy or clear.
Goodbye neighbors in Morgan Junction. I will really, really miss living alongside such an interesting, friendly, dynamic bunch of people. Whoever eventually buys our home (silent prayer) will be lucky to live in such a great neighborhood and I am green with envy.
Goodbye WSB forums. I probably won't post much anymore. Though I can still enjoy your rants and trolls. At least I will have that entertainment.
I could go on, but why torture myself? Some recommendations:
Nichelle, Loving Hands Childcare Preschool 206-763-7047. Never had a moment's worry leaving my boys there from 8 weeks old. We cried when we left after having been there for 4+ years. We got so much love, attention, learning, and growth there for our boys. The environment is so supportive, the kids all have so much fun. I really believe my boys could not have gotten a better start than we had there. I recommend her wholeheartedly and I know we left 2 openings so act fast if you're looking for care. Shelly truly loves her kids and treats them all like unique individuals.
Jeff with Champion Yard Service 206-335-7912. Reliable, friendly, efficient. Worked with him for years for regular service as well as larger jobs and was always happy with the work. Thanks Jeff!
Connie with Leave it to Me pet care 206-923-2463. She cared for our cats during vacations for many years, checked on the house, took in mail, watered plants, etc. Peace of mind, great communication, no worries, happy cats.

I am writing this following a very long cross country drive with small children, cats, and a nasty stomach virus, so I'm sure I've forgotten to mention someone. When I remember, I'll re-post. Meanwhile, happy summer to everyone, enjoy the weather (really, you all know how lucky you are, but I must remind you - enjoy it. We're melting over here).

Maybe someday we'll move back...a girl can dream.

  2. This just makes me sad. Yes, family is important. And hopefully you'll think of us here in WS as family , too, and come to visit when you can. I don't envy you the heat, but...my folks are in Pennsylvania, so I understand.

  3. Sorry that you had to leave us, Josie. Best of luck to you in your new home.

And don't be a stranger! We're just a click away!

  4. I, also, am moving from West Seattle this Sunday - heartsick to leave my beloved Alki.
Am joining the other 'brautiful people' (TV commercials?) at a SHAG retirement community in North Seattle - closer to my kids, cheaper rent, etc., etc.
But, North Seattle.! ! I know, I know. Lord have mercy!
Will be checking into WSB-land every day - am addicted.
    Will miss you all.

  5. Jo...North Seattle...seems very daunting..like another world entirely...but if luck is with us we'll have a roadway from there to here, and maybe you can come visit us whenever possible :) (and you can tell everyone that Stuart sent you - lol)

  6. Josie; oh I am so so sad to see you leave; wish I had known so could have come by your house to say goodbye and give you all a big hug; wish you well; hope to see you back soon
    ~
I’ve been following your cross-country trek on FB; guessing family might be your destination; maybe I can visit you someday, and see the state where I was born (but know nothing of it, having left at age 3)
    ~
thank god you have such wonderful extended family; that is a blessing many do not have; having met them, it’s good to know you are in great hands
    ~
I have so enjoyed knowing you, and thankful for you continuing to call me to care for your child/ren past few years; you are such a sweet loving family; I will miss you
    ~
and when you come back to visit, we now have a quality motel that just opened; they even have a family suite, with bunk bed for the boys; I can babysit at the motel while you get that special evening out at La Rustica
    ~
please let me know if there’s anything I can do from this end to help get your house sold, or anything else you may need personally
    ~
and please keep posting, keep us updated

  7. Jo, north end is not so bad, can be an adventure, and still doable to visit WS anytime; I had to move up to Lake City for 1 yr during the real estate craziness in 2006; got evicted from my rental house of 7 yrs (so her daughter could move in) at height of RE bubble; couldn’t find anything affordable in WS; I hunted from Renton to Edmonds; moved into MIL up north, saved money, moved back soon as lease ended; while in north end, it was great opportunity to explore areas that I never even knew existed; and use Burke Gilman trail to ride my bike, which I had never been on til then, or since; it’s just so far from WS)
    ~
enjoy and visit often; glad you’ll still keep in touch on westseattleblog

  8. My SHAG apt. is right across the street from BitterLake/Bitter Lake Park, so still have water to look at. And walking trails, etc.
I really lucked into a great apartment. Ground floor, slightly higher ceilings,, AND a large, covered porch looking cross to Bitter Lake Park.
It won't be so bad. Must think positive!
AND, I will be back to visit as often as I can.

Thank you Diane, I am sorry I wasn't in touch before we left. It was all a bit sudden. Thanks so much for being there for the boys these past years and all the best to you! Let us know if you're ever in the area.

I forgot a shout-out to full tilt, elliot bay brewpub, and especially azuma sushi. Azuma, you kept us happy with your butterfish nigiri for many years. You were always fast, friendly, fresh, and consistently great. It was so nice when you knew us by sight and (once we had kids) even knew us by our take-out order. A great place with the exact right atmosphere. There are those who prefer Mashiko and to them I say: you're wrong.

    Happy Saturday everyone :)

Jo, I grew up in the North end, just a little bit South [about a mile] of Bitter Lake. Love it there!!I've been in W.Seattle for over 30 years and it still feels more like home when I get to the North end of the Aurora Bridge.LOL All a matter of perspective. I spend four days and nights a week there now while caring for my mom.
You will be close to Northwest Hospital, one of the nicest hospitals in the Seattle area.Lots of shopping. You'll get used to it!
The way W.Seattle is changing I can't wait to be able to move back to the N.End!!!Never wanted to live in "little Bellevue"

Josie, sorry you loved it here and had to move.A shame when you have to leave a place you really love.

    Welcome back Jiggers..

  18. Thanks, Mike. I had bonded with Alki a long time before actually moving there. My Dad lived on the side of the hill across from Bar S field, and although we raised our kids in the North Ridge area of North Seattle, we spent alot of time visiting my Dad on Alki..
I always told myself that when my kids left home and I no longer had to live close to their schools, I was going to move into one of the little Alki beach cottages. Well I finally did move to Alki, not into one of the vanishing beach cottages, but to an apartment and immediately I knew that was where I belonged.
I got involved in the community right away and loved every minute of it. Even that Statue of Liberty fiasco. I was proud of what I was able to accomplish.
I know I'll be fine here in my new SHAG community. People are very friendly, and there's sure lots of things to do. Hell, I can even learn to crochet/knit, Wahoo.
Take care of yourself, Mike. I feel like I know you through these forums, and have always felt that you are one courageous, gentle soul..
    Best of luck to you.

  20. Jiggers, I don't know if JoB has e-mailed you yet, but she will be unavailable for a few days or so.

If you are physically and financially able, the inbound route 23, caught in front of Bartell's in White Center, is the bus that will take you down to NV.

Ring the bell just after the bus passes Pioneer Industries coming down Highland Park Way, and get off at the stop just up from West Marginal.

Cross W. Marg, and the triangular traffic island thingy heading southeastish, walk across the parking lot, and up over the berm, and the security desk is on the right. Tell 'em your looking for Mike Stahl.

As mentioned above, my current plans are to be in camp most or all of Thurs and Fri, and as it looks now, the same for Sat and Sun.

One more thing, after I leave the library in the next hour or so, my internet connections may be sporadic at best, until my next library visit which currently is appearing to be several days away.
