Goodbye my sweet Missy

  1. Tonight our wonderful basset hound Missy was put to sleep. We are hurting but so happy that the last years of her life were spent in our loving home. We rescued her from the Pierce County Humane Society 22 months ago. We knew she was an older girl and we wanted her last years to be happy.

Unfortunately, a tumor burst in her abdomen. The veterinarians and staff at the West Seattle Animal Hospital were so wonderful and compassionate. She passed so peacefully with my wife consoling her while I was with our young son and our neighbors Mari and Joanne. They are the best neighbors in the world. I miss that 60 pound bag of fleas lying on me snoring away.

Our pets are precious but the joy they have given our family outweighs the sorrow we are feeling tonight. Do me a favor and give your own pets an extra stroke or hug tonight.

We are grateful for our four kitties who we will be holding just a little tighter tonight.

    Goodbye beautiful Missy.

Rich, that's so sad -- you gave Missy a wonderful gift (and I have a feeling she did the same for you.) The c/b is thinking of you.

I'm so sorry for your loss. May I suggest that you make a tribute web page for her at Dogster.com. It's a great way to share your memories and a place to go see them after they've gone. If you do it, be sure to list West Seattle in the bio so she'll come up if WS dogs are searched. It's fun to see how many dogs are from WS!

  10. Rich, I'm so sorry to hear about that. I think it's so awesome that you adopted an older dog, by the way. I can tell from the picture that she was a cutie.

    Rich -

Your family's compassion for and adoption of an older dog warms my heart as well. She was a lucky girl who surely found her angel peeps.

Thank you for sharing the bitter-sweet rewards of such humanity. You make the world a better place for it. Truly.

westseattledood said it quite well, so I will keep it short and just say that I second their sentiment. My heart goes out to you and your wonderful family, Rich.

Rich, how fortunate Missy and your family were to have each other. She brought lots of joy to you and I'm sure she was happy and content in her last years.
    Blessings to you all.

  16. We rescued an old gentleman lab mix named Bandit about 7 years ago. We're grateful that he's still with us. I'm sorry about your Missy passing. She has such a soulful face, just like our Bandit. Blessings.

  17. Rich..

    i am so sorry.

no matter how long we have them they always leave us too soon...

making the best choices for those we love isn't always easy... especially those we rescued... they have special places in our heart.

  18. Bless you for adopting an OLDER animal and making their last years' so comfortable. And I know from experience, it is truly amazing how much they appreciate it.

Pasado's Safe Haven does great things for older animals. You can even just volunteer to take the senior dogs out for occasional outings.

  19. Thank You all soooooo much. All of you are so wonderful. It is very helpful and comforting to hear your well wishes.

It is much quieter without her snoring plus the clip clop of her toenails on the wooden floor when she was chasing our son for some food. Life is already so different without her and for now we are sad.

In time we will get another wonderful dog. Again, Thank You so much. Have a nice weekend everyone. Have a howl for us and keep your tails wagging.

Rich - It's really, really nice to read a post from someone as caring as you. You and your family/friends are the kind of neighbors anyone could wish for... The loss of a pet is never easy. Much thanks to you for having the compassion to allow one of our four-legged "family" members the opportunity to enjoy their "Golden Years".

Such a hard loss, but you gave her good times and the best possible death under the circumstances she faced with cancer. An extra hug to your kid as witness to compassion, that he may grow up to be as strong, loving and capable as those he sees around him.
