Free soba at Mashiko

  1. Found this while wandering around online looking for after-Christmas sale info to include in the next front-page item.

It's really great. They have a sustainable business idea: http://sushiwhore.com/sustainablesushibar.html

I wanted to thank WSB earlier for this suggestion. My father and I went there last night and enjoyed the free soba (I only knew about that because of this forum). My father is "vegan" and had the Vegetable Assortment under Sushi Assortments. I was kind of jealous of what he got. Our server was exceptionally considerate and didn't want to serve him the miso soup because it has fish stock. We both felt guilty when he asked for a bowl anyway.

I had the Dynamite roll, among other things. I love it because of the tomiko (flying fish roe), so while you're chewing there are these exquisite little miniature pops of, well, dynamitish business. (I'm not expressing that well, but it's a really good spicy tuna roll.)

I love unagi, but they don't serve it because it isn't sustainable. They serve namagi instead, which is a reasonable substitute. I mean, it's really only about the sauce anyway. And I can feel even better because I'm not doing any further damage than my norm (which is admittedly substantial - I'm not as conscientious as I would like to be).

I want to go back again, because they have a desert called the Coco-a-gogo, which if I remember correctly is a Bakery Nouveau brownie, dipped in panko and coconut and deep-fried, and served with green tea ice cream.

    I mean, seriously, folks...

P.S. I have a history of not researching things well enough, so please don't take my word for anything when it comes to sustainable practices. But I have a good feeling about Mashiko. Well wishes to you.

Oh, P.P.S. The women's bathroom at Mashiko... It, in my humble opinion and for reasons that can only be experienced, rivals that of the Columbia Tower, which has a certain reputation. There are views, and there are...other things.

That's it. I'm sneaking into that bathroom before 2010 is over.

i can't decide which is better at mashiko's... the food (which is exceptional!) or the toilet (which is awesome!).

i'll have to go back and figure it out for good.
