Forum Meet-up? 7 PM Wed 8/12

  1. I can think of no better place for a meet-up of forum members than at the town hall forum being provided by the 34th district democrats this Wednesday (tomorrow) to discuss Health Care Reform with Jim McDermott..

    http://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=19617

We have the opportunity to make this a discussion of ideas and not a media frenzy of traded insults...

democrat? republican? progressive? Green party? communist? Citizen?

It doesn't matter. You have an investment in making certain there is a discussion because you have an investment in how this discussion turns into legislation.

There is no question that there will be health care reform legislation. The only question is whether that reform will benefit you or the health insurance companies more.

All we have to do to keep this a discussion and guarantee our right as residents of West Seattle to be heard is show up.

    I'd love to have company..

  2. Well, you know we'll be there because the 34th District Democrats, as the area's largest political group, are one of the community groups whose meetings we always cover. I'll be in the front row with laptop and video camera(s).

  3. TR.. i was thinking more of an inconspicuous spot in the back.. but since i have agreed to meet charlabob.. that's probably unlikely...

anyone want to place bets or drink wagers on whether or not i will be able to contain myself and stay silent?

    ;->

  4. That's a losing bet, JoB. Not a chance in the world of you being quiet. :)

  5. Job, as long as you are buying and telling some good jokes you can talk as much as you want.

  6. Which brings up a good point - the 34th District Democrats have the only meeting we cover each month in which imbibing can and does take place. Sometimes the Highland Park Action Committee has beverages as a holdover from its pre-meeting potluck.

  7. TR..
    LOL.. i should have known.

    Kg..
I am told i am humor impaired. good stories? yes... ironic black humor? yes... good jokes? no.. i flub the punch line:(

you will have to get your evening's entertainment another way:)

i am not buying drinks for anyone unless they show up AND identify themselves to me AND bet against me being quiet AND i can't help myself and speak up.

    That's a lot of ANDs..

but i am willing to bring some money with me:)))
i suspect my incentive to remain quiet would increase with the number of bettors.. but i have been known to pay a great deal to speak my mind in the past ;->

LOL.. that is a major understatement:)It gives me belly laughs just to think about it.

    Aim..
you are right.. it's a bet i am more likely than not to lose. but it might be fun to see me try:)

And the event might end up being good conversation... you never know.

I'm actually thinking of going to the 34th District meeting, though I don't exactly know what to expect.

Will it be a local Democrats issue-only kind of thing, where Rep. McDermott happens to speak, or is it more of a health care-only question-and-answer session for McDermott?

I've been frantically researching the bill so that I can ask intelligent, direct questions of him without being booed out of the hall as a teabagging moron.

  9. Sky2625--

You should attend if you want to. The 34th LD Dems have always welcomed everyone, and that means everyone. I think anyone with honest questions who attends looking to have a real dialogue will not be unwelcome.

However, those who scream about euthanizing Grandma and standing in front of imaginary 'death panels' with Sarah Palin should expect nasty looks and not-so-subtle mocking.

LOL.. i suspect this is also an understatement..

    "not-so-subtle mocking"

but i agree. i would love to hear intelligent questions but don't have much patience with the current set of accusations masquerading as questions.

  11. Rep Larsen is having a town meeting in Everett this afternoon (5 p.m.)so it looks like that one may draw heat from our little get together in West Seattle tonight.

That could mean useful conversation about Health Care.

I think i am getting excited about this.

The email I got yesterday from MoveOn.org made this seem like a town hall meeting. However, Rep. McDermott sent out a message saying this is just a regular 34th District Dems meeting, where everyone is always welcome. I think I'm going to check it out. I've finally convinced someone to go with me.

  13. My spirit is willing but my body says no:(

will someone please post to let me know how it went?

  14. we had some running coverage on the home page. full article later. biggest crowd I have ever seen in the room. standing room only and sitting on the floor, on all sides. plus a group of sign holders outside. But nobody shouted anyone down. It was peaceful and lively.

  15. So if it was peaceful and lively, will it make "headline news"? I think we all know the answer.

    Posted 2 years ago #
  16. Well, Patrick informed me belatedly (he was outside for part of the time since we wanted to keep an eye on the smaller crowd out there too) that one guy was escorted out for repeatedly yelling, LIAR! I did see one TV camera when I first arrived. I would guess (without having looked at 10 pm tv news and I'm not looking at 11 pm either) that this might be folded into a larger piece on the apparently more contentious "town hall" up in Everett earlier today.

  17. I am glad the more contentious town hall was in Everett..
i just wish i had been up to attending this one..

but being taken our of a crowded and hot room by paramedics is more entertainment than i was willing to provide:(

My question is how we get a single payer option back on the table?
