Feeling sad today.......

  1. Had to put down my golden retriever of over 13 years yesterday. Not sure exactly why I am posting this here, but funny enough I feel a connection to a lot of you, regardless of political affiliation. :~)

Our boy had a stroke and could no longer stand up and would not eat - despite his best efforts. His mommy and I took him to Lein - they could not have been better - and had him put to "sleep".

Lots of difficult things in this life - way more difficult than losing an animal - but this hurts more than anything to date. Guess I should consider myself lucky.

My loyal, friendly, jeep-riding, bed snuggling companion who loved the beach (leashed!) and was a great big brother to my twins is gone.

Rest in peace my friend. You earned it.

Edit: Now some of my neighbors might know who Smitty is! Yikes!

Smitty, sending you hugs and lots and lots of understanding. Our pets become our family and when they go, we have truly lost a loved one. Take care of yourself and hold your family close.

    No need to explain...

    Precious gifts, they are.
    Take care.

  4. So sorry for your loss...our pets are family and their loss is never easy. A saying I always found comforting when a beloved pet was put to sleep.

Animals never belong to us, they pass through our lives on journeys of their own. They ask no more of us than that we love them and let them go on in dignity and peace.

Animals come and go with lessons to learn and lessons to teach. So, we love them and learn. We accept the pain of their going as we received the joy of their coming. All of it is a blessing.

Smitty, I'm so sorry. Saying goodbye to these beloved family members is always heartwrenching. In time the happy memories will be a little stronger than the sadness. Again, my sympathies to you and your family.

  10. Smitty,

hugs are not enough.. but you have mine anyway.

i think putting a beloved pet to sleep is one of the hardest things we do. Yes, we know it is the right thing for them.. but no matter how expected.. it is never the right thing for us.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Smitty. Their habits become ours - they are in the fabric of our lives. And they're always in a good mood - ready for anything. Big joy, big loss.
    Take care.

  14. You all made each other's lives richer. He was lucky to have you all and vice versa. Hang in there, and take care.

  16. My condolences on your loss. it is so tough even when you know it is time. We lost our 12 year old dog in November and we are still feeling pretty sad. Our fur friends just don't live long enough. :(

  17. It's the hardest thing about having a pet, having the responsibility to know when their quality of life has come to the place where it's time for them to go. I had my dog for 16 years and it was a very sad day when I knew that he was ready to pack it in. I could see it in his eyes. Condolences.

I still cry about by beloved 17 year old cat I had to put down almost 3 years ago. I found this chain email buried in my inbox yesterday. To this day even tough I don't follow any religion it lends a smile to the tears... Remember it's okay to cry.

For anyone who has ever lost a furry family member.....

We don't know who replied, but there is a beautiful soul working in the dead letter office of the US postal service.

Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so, and she dictated these words:

    Dear God,
Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.
I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
    Love, Meredith

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

    Dear Meredith,
Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away.
Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I'm easy to find. I am wherever there is love.

Loving a pet brings so much love into the world. Thank you for that. I'm so sorry for your family at this time of goodbye, and hope time and wonderful memories will bring comfort to you.

Smitty, you came to the right place as I discovered a few months ago when my beloved elder kitty passed away. The grief can be devastating, and there's no shame in it. Every being is unique and special, and love is love - regardless of species. Take care of yourself.
