Today while at Nickelsville we heard that there are families with children, so Mike, (miws) do we know of any special needs that the kids may need or want that maybe the community can get for them?

This doesn't surprise me. Families are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. Nationally that number grew by 40% in one year. In Washington State, during the same time period, 37%.
This is devastating for our children. I hope permanent housing is made available as quickly as possible.Posted 11 months ago # -
Definitely post a kids' needs list! We have growing kids and much we could donate that they don't need anymore. Ages/sizes would be very useful!

Talked to a few people there today to get an idea about what the kids need and for now they said socks and shoes. Haven't gotten the sizes yet but there's six kids ranging from 7 yrs to 13 yrs. They're working on a needs list.

FYI: Families with children (esp. single parents) get priority for permanent housing from Seattle Housing Authority and King County Housing Authority. They also have top priority at small shelters for women.
For anyone with children under 16, I'd suggest checking with SHA and KCHA for starters. Then try the emergency shelter providers such as Sisters of Providence and St. Vincent DePaul.
If I had young children I would do anything within the law (and a few things not within the law) to keep a roof over their heads. Unfortunately, many parents either aren't aware of what's out there or are afraid to ask for help.
Providing help for the kids at Nickelsville is a good thing to do. Helping a family get into housing is even better.

Thanks DP, these are all good resources for families who are homeless. And there is just not enough. There is not a night that goes by with empty housing intended for homeless families. The one-night-count revealed that there were way too many families with children turned away because there was not enough room.
And there are homeless youth on the streets without a bed also. I'm grateful for Nickelsville and their ability and willingness to take families.
And thanks Mike for posting the list!Posted 11 months ago # -
Your welcome, fp.
And I know I've mentioned before, how thankful we are of how WSB'ers and the West Seattle and White Center communities have come through with help.
It's not really a surprise, knowing the compassion and generosity of our community, but it is still awe inspiring.
It's almost as if everyone is sitting, waiting, for a plea for help to go out, and once it does, BAM! the community is responding, even before "the ink is dry"
