Katie, it would be great if some people also took note of the Teal Pumpkin campaign (http://www.foodallergy.org/teal-pumpkin-project), and provided some non-food treats for trick-or-treaters with food allergies, who can find Halloween rather discouraging.
In recent years, I have advocated taking back Halloween by giving home-made treats. To forestall poisoning/razor-blade/drugging fears, I add a sticker with the ingredients, and a “made by your neighbor” notice with my address. They are very well-received. I love the neighborhood cohesiveness Halloween can bring, and I think the homeyness of home-made treats can help foster that.
