   Go outside and look at your trees and bushes. They are budding early this year. Also the tulips are poking thru early.
   IS mother nature telling us something?

   Yes! Mother Nature is telling us to be more observant! What you're describing is very typical plant behavior for this time of year. In fact, some of the plants I'm watching are actually running a little late this year.

   For the past few days, I've been hearing song sparrows doing their spring-song warmups, too. And yes, I suspect Jan's right, we'll have another snow before winter is said and done. I really think we have more than 4 seasons here. Maybe we can call this one "mock spring" or "spring teaser"?

   i can't wait for spring!! bummed that (so far) we haven't had more snow, but for me january and february are just the "treading water" months before stuff starts happening here again.

   on that note, spring here in seattle is the most spectacular season EVER! i transplanted 6 years ago from CA and would never want to go back. i'll be hopping excited when the first crocuses (?) start coming up... then the irises & tulips... the rhodies... omg omg omg!

   Yay! Buds and shoots! Isn't it cool how everything responds to the subtle, slow increase in daylight we are seeing?

   Spring is my favorite season and my perennial shade garden proves it. But this year, I'm so excited because I'm going to be able to *finally* get a vegetable garden in. I've even been perusing canning materials :). Psyched to learn how to do that! Freeze stuff, yup. Canning? Never. But, we've got Feb and March to get through and they can be oh so wild and wooly.

    Anybody have a forsythia blooming?

    When I had my house, there was a forsythia, Rhody, lilac, apple tree, holly and roses.

    The forsythia was always the early bloomer, so when it started blooming, that meant to me that it was Spring.

    The earliest "Spring" I can remember, in my 15 years living there, was February.

    Come on, kids -- don't we believe in the groundhog out here? (And can anyone tell me if shadow/six more weeks of winter is good or bad?) I predict a November ice/snow/sleet/whine about the DPW period in mid-February. But I know about as much as a groundhog.

    I went snowshoeing today, pretty wintery if you ask me. Too, my camellia always blooms this time of year.
    I predict that everybody is going to be talking about how it's still too cold come june.

    The forsythia is blooming, as well as the sarcococca and mahonia. My hellebores are ready to pop. The starlings are waging their annual hormonal assault on my soffits. It's a bit early to prune roses, especially as more snow and hard freezes are predicted. The weather is a perennial topic...

    JoB,

    My Golden retriever, Molly, is having NO trouble working the ground (I fear my crocosmia will be a little thinner this year..). Let me know if you need to borrow her for earth turning or hole digging - she really excels at hole digging! ;-)
