Dogs in Ercolini Playground

  1. last night I was babysitting and took the kids (5 & 6 ½) for first visit to Ercolini playground; they loved it, running around trying out everything; was wonderful to see all the families and babies; beautiful playground; they had a blast

then a woman came sauntering through with a toddler, and 3 large dogs, all off-leash, and she seemed to think it was just fine to let the dogs walk all around the playground, sniffing everything, nosing up to all the kiddies, unsupervised; no one said anything to her (including me, though very annoyed, and not sure of the rules there) but I think she may have gotten enough looks to at least finally lead the dogs over to a grassy area to lay down, for a while; then they started roaming the play area again, right there with all the babies; they didn’t look dangerous, mostly very old and slow, but I still don’t think it’s a good idea to have dogs unfamiliar to children roaming on a playground

I previously saw posts on here about off leash dogs, and a phone number to call, but didn’t have it with me; it’s now in my phone for next time out

I know that many dog owners encourage their dogs to run free, right past all the “no dogs allowed” signs at beaches and parks, but it could be helpful at this new playground; I would be more likely to approach the dog owner if there were a sign to back me up

    http://www.passiveaggressivenotes.com/

but I think you have to print out this post and leave it at the park first.

  3. Yes, Vincent! That\'s the site for sure.

Last Thursday, me walking by Fairmount Playground. Female shows up with a retriever and a smaller dog, gets out of her car and walks towards the playground with both dogs off leash. The small dog runs at me and my leashed large dog while we\'re out on the sidewalk. I tell her to get control of her dog, she repeatedly calls it (nags it) to come back to her and it finally does. She continues into the park, and I nicely tell her the dogs need to be leashed. She smiles and walks on, throwing the tennis ball.
I say hey, I\'m now calling Animal Control. And I do.

I make a report and Monday afternoon they called me back to say she had been warned. That\'s all I need to know because I bet she\'ll either go somewhere else in the future or leash her dogs.

  6. Diane—I too was at Ercolini park last night and was amazed by the clueless lady with 3 dogs unleashed around the small children. I called Animal Control and reported her. The fine is $54 (per dog) for having a dog off-leash. If Animal Control would have come in time, she would have also incurred a significant fine (for each dog) for not having a pet license. None of the dogs were wearing collars. Without a visible tag, she would have been fined for each dog.

You might want to program this number into your cell phone for Animal Control: (206) 386-7387. Press 7 at the first prompt to reports dogs off-leash at a public park. Also, if you take the license number of the car of the pet owner, Animal Control will track down the pet owner and send a warning letter.

  9. Oh my gosh Vincent, I spent the last hour on the Passive-Aggressive website and laughed so hard I cried!! I think that website should be required reading for every new college freshman having to share living spaces with other humans. Rocket pube is my favorite so far.

  10. Thanks Corey, for calling animal control, and for all the great tips

I didn\'t even notice the dogs were untagged, and unaware of that rule

also didn\'t notice if this woman walked in, or got out of a car, but great tip about getting license plate

I feel much more empowered to take action next time

the animal control number is now in my phone

I’ve been running through my visual memory of that eve, trying to picture which dad you are; it certainly was a fun & busy night at the playground

btw, wouldn’t it be fun to have wsblog tshirts?

everywhere I go in Seattle, especially in WS, I rave about wsblog; as large as this community has grown, many still don’t know about it; if there were cute wsblog tshirts, I would wear one for sure; thoughts TR?

  11. We have been going there at least once every weekend since they opened and there is always someone with a dog off leash. One time a man was asked to keep his dog away b/c there was a girl who had a fear of dogs. the guy said sure and then the dog still ran wild. I too have now added the number to my cell phone.

I like dogs, but loose dogs and kids don\'t always mix well. If the nieghbors want an off leash park, they need to work for it, like this neighborhood did to get the playground.

OMG, this is like the 5,672nd thread on off-leash dogs.

But I am so glad to see people take a strong stand for things.

    /snark off

Ya know, I have a dog and I like to let him off the leash when I can. But I usually do it at \"off hours\" in parks where there is more open room than people. If there are people and/or kids around I put him on the leash. (Even though he\'s usually pretty responsive when I call him.
He\'s a small dog and really friendly and loves people and will just beg attention from anyone if I let him. But I realize that he\'s invading peoples personal space unless they call to him or make some gesture to make contact with him.
So therefor I leash him when people are around and let him off when it seems clear.
The reason I do this is because I feel it\'s very inconsiderate when people let their dogs run around getting into other peoples personal space.
It\'s hard at times, because I know he wants to go and say hi to everyone and get petted, he LOVES it. But it would be irresponsible of me to just assume everyone is just as glad to see him.
