Dog Cruelty at Alki

I just had an awful experience witnessing a woman whipping her small 5 lb. dog down at Alki. As I and my five big dogs approached the woman to pass, her dog froze and wouldn't stand or walk. This was understandable since my dogs totaled about 350 lbs. and might be intimidating to a toy breed.
The woman attempted to drag her dog along, and when this failed, she started whipping the dog with a leash. She whipped the dog 5-6 times across the back before I pulled up and demanded that she stop. I proceeded to verbally assail her for being cruel. I am a professional dog-trainer and handler and simply cannot abide cruelty to animals. Since the dog couldn't defend itself against a human twenty times its size, I considered it my role to intercede. The woman stopped, but it took quite a chewing out.
Has anyone else witnessed such cruelty? The woman was of retirement age, about 5'6", 110 lbs., with white hair (I know--a wolf in grandma's clothing.) The dog was mostly brown but I couldn't determine what breed.
I don't know what makes some people think it's okay to beat animals; it's against the law. This little dog had no idea what the woman wanted and she just laid into it.
    Shame!!!

Good for you! It IS your role to intercede. Why "grandma" thinks it's OK to beat up on her small dog is a mystery to me. Too bad no cops present to give her a citation. Hope that the old bully finally gets a clue that what she did in not OK.

I did indeed. Sorry, a family member got on my computer and gave their reaction.

  6. Thank you for saying something. I hate when people just stand by and watch something like that. I have not seen her but if I do..I will continue the verbal lashing.

  7. Good for you Dog Kahuna! I cannot abide animal cruelty either and it does my heart good to hear of people standing up to defend the small and helpless among us. Many kudos to you.

Good for you! Next time, take her photo and upload it. Being cruel to an animal that is a pet is so much more than horrible. Let's see if she continues after she is pictured and animal lovers know her face.
