I've had take-out a few times. Tried something new every time and enjoyed it all! Their 4 star spicy is atomic but still edible. It will definitely clear up your sinuses though. The new owners are really nice too.

  3. FYI Thaitan is one of the few restaurants we have found so far that will be open Christmas Day. (First version of Christmas Eve/Day restaurant list coming out tonight)

  4. I love Thai food but haven't found a restaurant that will deliver to Alki.
Well, Thaitan does. I called them yesterday, after reading your posts, and they faxed me a menu.
Guess what I'm having for dinner tonight (and lunch tomorrow).
If anyone has any favorites, please post.

  5. I just noticed today that The Thaitan is in restaurant.com. Get a gift certificate for $2. Code is SANTA for 80% off.

Actually, did not purchase this one this time. Wish I would have read this before I purchased a few gift certificates this morning.

  6. Jo, thanks for the delivery detail. We're about to interview the proprietor and I will make sure that gets into the story.

  7. Got company, so didn't wait for dinner to order.
    ,
    We got three different entrees:
Naam tok (marinated beef salad), YUUUMMMM YUM YUM
    Crispy Garlic Chicken, YUUUUMMMMMMY
Yellow Curry Fried Rice, equally YUMMY. (Will probably order just plain pork fried rice next time, though)
The portions seemed HUGE! Even with three of us, I still have alot left over.
    .
With tax, the bill came to around $10.95 per entree (Including tax), plus tip. Not bad at all. And there was no charge for delivery. Many places just won't deliver down here to Alki, so that's why I was so excited to find out that The Thaitan does. I definitely will order from here again when I get a Thai craving - which happens often.

  8. I have kind of a mental block when it comes to Thai food--mainly because Thai cuisine features sweet food, but most offer a version of Chinese/Asian stuff too. So perhaps that is why I have no clue where Thaitan is...Can someone post the address?

Tried yesterday for lunch. BF had the lunch special with Pad See Iew (wide noodles, gravy, chicken and broccoli), and he enjoyed it very much. I had the Larb Salad with sticky rice. My dish was authentic (I have Laotian and Thai friends who cook for me, and they didn't tone it down for the uninitiated)and the 4-star could have been hotter, but I pepper everything!
They do have pho, but honestly I think they don't need it on the menu, but then again, I live near White Center so I am spoiled with all the Vietnamese food right near me :)
I will be back to try thier pumpkin curry (to compare with Buddha Ruska's)and various other yummies- I hope they have Papaya Salad...

  14. I've been for lunch a few times.. Always good!

  15. We tried Thaitan yesterday and enjoyed it. I am not an expert on Thai food but I have visited Thailand a bunch of times, spending several months there. I thought the food was excellent and much more authentic than many of the other Thai places around here. The curry was particularly good.

  16. That is good to read, hammy. I've only been to Thailand once but my brother's in-laws are Thai and Chinese and very particular about food. I've not been too impressed with Buddha Ruska and have mostly gone to Kaosamai up in Fremont for my fix. Sounds like I should give Thaitan a try.

I had to revisit this thread after returning to the Thaitan recently. The food was Very Very good. Solid from top to bottom. I have now been back 3 times in 2 weeks and have to say the consistency is there. And that seems to be the hardest thing for restaurants to realize ...consistency.

We went when it first opened and were completely under-whealmed. Now it's quickly becoming my favorite Thai joint in the city. It kills me to see a place with the quality food they have at the prices they charge constantly empty.

Oh, and the service is always friendly and prompt and comfortable. Maybe because they're empty all the time. Do yourself a favor and give this place a second (or first) try.

I took my family there and we loved the food! We hope to go back again soon!

  19. I, too, have enjoyed Thaitan...had some excellent food . Definitely more people should give it a try.

  20. Another recent convert! Their Pad Thai reminds me a lot of Thai Tom on the Ave, which is my favorite for noodles anywhere in the city. Looking forward to exploring more of their menu.

  21. You all have talked me into it! This place is right around the corner from my house and I guess it's time to give it a try!!

did you ever make ti to thai tan?
i am curious as to how you rated it.

i'm not so impressed with buddah ruska myself..

but have been back to thai tan several times
in spite of the fact that i am not so impressed with their tom ka :(

  23. How does the crispy garlic chicken compare to Buddha Ruksa?
Whenever I see the Thaitan building all I can think of is bad mexican food.

    Posted 1 year ago #
  24. Wait, wait, did somebody make a comparison to Thai Tom??? I was a regular there when I lived in the U-District years back; I haven't found anything that compares, in my book. Must. Try. Soon!

The crispy garlic chicken is AWESOME! I get it every time I go. I find the garlic not as blackened but there's plenty of it. The prep seems the same otherwise. The chicken is cooked perfectly every time. I'm telling you, the consistency is there.

Also good: Panang Curry with beef (or any other protien, but beef worked particularly well), Phad Prik King (Green Beans), Phad Thai, Phad Ke Mao, Green Curry.

After the salt bomb that was their garlic chicken which I got several months ago I didn't think I'd go back, but due to the last few rave posts I gave it another try last night.

I had chicken stir-fried w/ chili paste, garlic, and fried basil. Very tasty - and not too salty. It's super convenient to my house so, as long as it remains as good as what I got last night, I'll put it in rotation. Nice host too.

  27. Had Larb, Tom Ka, and Pumpkin Curry today at The Thaitan...all three were excellent, and I will be a return diner!

    Posted 1 year ago #
  28. We love Thaitan! Take out from there saved us post-baby. We're vegetarians, and so can only speak to those dishes, but we've been really pleased! The Basil stir-fry with tofu is really good, as is the Garlic Chicken stir-fry with tofu, spring rolls...everything we've had has been pretty tasty! And they are super nice and welcoming of children if you dine-in.

I did not have the good experience as you all did. I loved their service and got delivery and maybe it was just being my being sick..., but I did not like their food. And for the record, I am not THAT picky. Mostly I was disappointed in their Tom Yum soup--an all time fav. usually. It just tasted really salty, so much so that I didn't finish it. Their yellow curry was pretty good but not great, the rice was dry, and the wide rice noodle dish was just soggy with the veggies and tofu not up to par at all. I guess I saw the hype on here and thought they'd be really great, so I am a little disappointed. :(

  30. having my first experience with Taco Thai...er, I mean The Thaitan. I am strictly in the "meh" camp as well. I asked for 5 stars, hoping I would at least get 4. I got ONE. Thank goodness I have a bottle of Sriracha at my desk. Got the lunch special, which inexplicably comes with both noodles AND rice.

The pros on this experience is that the waitress was very nice, it was very fast to pick up a to-go order and the restaurant is really cute on the inside.

  31. Thaitan is my personal favorite Thai food in the city. I am not the biggest proponent of that garlic chicken everyone seems to think is the pinnacle of Westside Thai cuisine, however, so I could be off-mark in recommending it. I can eat giant piles of the fried rice from Thaitan any time of any day. It's my comfort food!

  32. Alright - finally made it over to Thaitan today for the Crispy Garlic Chicken comparison.
Sad to say, while Thaitan's CGC is tasty - it is _not_ "Crack Chicken".
The chicken pieces were large and tender but dipped in a batter and fried then lightly coated with a crispy fried garlic sauce and lots of fried basil.
Buddha Ruksa's "Crack Chicken" is smaller pieces of chicken (which yes can get dry on occasion) probably coated in corn starch for a crispness and a sweet/spicy/garlicy sauce that I would love to be able to replicate! The sauce is where it's at!
I do like the decor of the Thaitan and the staff is very friendly.

Price for both places is about the same, so I don't think one is cheaper than the other.

We also had Pad See Ew with tofu, yum, and crab won tons, standard, but tasty.

Maybe we were there on an off day, but I'm sorry to say we had the worst Thai food of our lives there.
The Tom Yum was mostly salt and didn't appear to have any lemongrass in it, though to its credit it was as spicy as we'd asked for (4 stars).
The pumpkin curry (which I love at Buddha Ruksa and liked pretty well at Tom Yum Koong, RIP) was just plain weird (though it did have large chunks of pumpkin, which were delicious). Four enormous chunks of pumpkin, six large chunks of tofu, one teeny sliver of red pepper and two layers of sauce (do they not have a whisk?) trying to pass for curry. The top layer appeared to be chili oil while the bottom was coconut cream.
The panang curry also featured a similar bizarre sauce, large chunks of tofu and a couple of tiny slivers of red pepper.
Where are the vegetables in this joint? What's with the oil slick on the curry?
All in all a disappointing experience, and we won't be back.

  34. I would NEVER ever go there again! We live within walking distance and were so excited to try it recently. As I took a bite of my pad thai I found broken egg shells! Ick! My husband looked at the container in the kitchen and found MORE. He called them and they brought us a new order. I will say it took longer for that delivery than the first. It was totally different (i.e. freshly made) compared to the garbage they delivered originally.

I will not be back for a third time.

Buddha Ruksa remains for me the best Thai food in West Seattle. If you haven't been there yet give them a try.

I haven't been to Palin Thai in about a year or so, but every time I have gone it has been very good.

  38. I haven't been recently either, but Palin Thai was very good when I went. It doesn't have the ambiance of Buddha Ruksa, but it's less expensive and the food is great.

Pailin has some really good food, especially if you have a taste for the pungent and spicy. I've had several dishes there, and while not all were great, the ones that were have become favorites that I crave often. Both the Wild Noodle Soup and the Thai Sukiyaki are awesome - intense flavors with plenty of heat. The Yum Woon Sen is also worth a try.
