Do you remeber when?

I promise I won't complain, but does anybody remember when--

Salty's on Alki was the Beach Broiler, Blockbuster was the Royal Fork and a hardware store before that, Admiral Safeway had a restaurant inside, the JC Penney's at the junction, the pet store at the junction was an A&P, Spuds was the best fish n' chips in town, Metropolitan Market was a Lucky store, U-haul on 35th and Morgan was a Safeway and PCC was a QFC?

..and for you younger people-- the Sea Gally restaurant, Barnecutt's Shell was a Texaco and before that a Richfield, the Old Hour Tavern and there were no condos on Alki?

My only complaint is-- the traffic, but I promised I wouldn't complain, didn't I? By the way I moved here in 1965 and I'm 65.

i remember the Beach Broiler from escapes to Seattle in my misspent youth:)

Well, almost yes. The only one I don't have a personal recall of was the Royal Fork being a hardware store, although I've known it had been one.

I can't remember when the switch from bolts to buffet took place, but would think I'd remember it, since my Dad, Brother, and I regularly dined at Yen Wor from around '67-'69!

West Seattle Dennys, Herfy's, Skipper's, West SEattle Bike Shop, Whatever grocery store was in the PetCo space. The Shack, Dogmeat's Records.

I could go on on on on....

I loved Groucho's I liked their burgers and shakes. Did you know that before Groucho's the building was a KFC.

I didn't know that! I remember my mom and I used to go down there and get burgers for our elderly neighbor and her dog - he didn't like the pickles. :)

Dogmeats was a huge part of my childhood - my best friend's dad was "Dogmeat" and she was known as "Puppy Chow" - I loved it there and Dave was a great guy. He gave me his Beatles Anthology promo posters when he was done with them :). Anyone still have one of his shirts?

I DO remember when.... Rite Aid was a Safeway, Denny's was close by and I could pop into JC Penney's to buy underwear for my kids; didn't have to drive 10 miles for underwear. :)

I remember the Royal Fork, although I never ate there and West Seattle was sort of sneered at by the rest of the City, until we got a bridge with the coolest views in the area and home prices started to rise. Well, who's sneering now... We even have lots of happy hours, which never used to be the case in West Seattle.

...and the Safeway-turned-Rite Aid was a Pay-N-Pak before that, and Penneys was the West Seattle Hospital (I was born there). And Sheppards Drugstore was in the Admiral Junction, as was Bob's Meats and the Five-and-Dime (about where Zatz is). And Rainier Bank was across from the Porterhouse. Oh, and a gas station was diagonally across from Royal Fork/Blockbuster!

oh - and don't forget Wigwam (where Sleepers Sofas is now). And the Granada Theater (now Granada condos), one block north of Pay-N-Pak-Safeway-Rite Aid.

Ah yes I remember it well! How about the cafeteria in the back of Morton's - the best cheeseburgers I have ever had! Also how pcc used to be a Prairie Market where you had to mark the prices of the items on the boxes with a crayon?

I remember many of those places! I have lived in WS for 20 years this spring (20 years! OMG!) but have been hanging out here for about 26 or so. My MIL still calls Met Market Luckys sometimes.

Loved the old Beach Broiler lounge. Also, remember when the Charlestown cafe was Penny's Doghouse Drive-In? And of course, MacDonald's was Zesto's and Dairy Queen in the Met Market parking lot.

There used to be Joe breakfast grill joint were Easy Street is now and PetCo used to be a bingo hall.

I sold girl scout cookies outside Lucky's, and then in high school many of my friends worked at the Royal Fork. Nearly 30 years here, wow. I miss the Shack, I'd walk down from my house on Sunset as a kid. Seemed like such a long walk! Some things haven't changed, though... Every time I go by the 7-11 at Erskine, I remember walking there from SLHS to get a King size Snickers & 32oz coke every day (I was a skinny rail of a kid who could get away with it!).

Why, in my day we lived in trees and speared hairy mammoths for breakfast. The grocery store was a swamp and it had mosquitos the size of chimpanzees. When it rained I'd go down there and catch frogs for a snack. There were so many of them that I personally invented the number "four" one day. It was a Tuesday but no one wanted to have Tuesdays yet and I believe we were better off without them. Even so sometimes I'd feel overwhelmed by the rat race of modern life and get drunk on rotten berries.

That was a Pay-N-Save where Rite Aid on California is. Pay-N-Pak was at Westwood, and wasn't it Ernst before that? Barnecuts was next to Angelina's, but that was Perky's back in the day. There was a Dairy Barn where the Admiral 7-11 is, and a little store at the corner of California and Walker, across from the Antique Store that has only been open occasionally - ever. There was a little store just to the north of there, too.

And there was a fire station on the corner where we have the Sunday market. The hardware store used to be where Northwest Art and Frame is, next to Blakes Bakery. It was N and N Variety around where Zatz is, owned by two old ladies who were sisters. There was a drug store on each corner at Calif. and Admiral, now a bank and a florist.

Oh! Palin Thai (I think it's called... across from the old Royal Fork) used to be the Captain's Table. The thai place has been there quite a while, tho.

I lived across the street when the fire dept burned down that old derelict house as a training drill to build the SNIFF (oldfolks home) at Calif & Palm - remember when it was 3 shades of coral/pink? That wasn't too long ago in comparison to most of this thread, but it was like that for a long time, and I'm happy to forget it.

I wish that antique store would be open more often... I've NEVER been able to swing a visit on a Saturday. I secretly think it's someone's "storage unit" masquerading as an antique store.

Thanks AlkiSandi for bringing up some good memories of the old days...let's not forget the PennyLane record store that used to be in the junction and Hoolighans store where you could get all the "penny candy" for a penny, really. I think it used to be next to where Alki Bike and Board is now. Does anyone remember what Alki Bike used to have in it...can't quite remember

I remember the N&N...that store just fascinated me when I was small. And Merediths 5 & Dime and the G O Guy where Arts West is now...I wish stores like that still existed. Did I miss mention of the Junction Feed and Seed where the Bikram Yoga studio is now? They used to sell pet fish and hermit crabs there too. And didn't the Wells Fargo at the Admiral Junction used to be a clothing store at one point?
