Do not give live bunnies for Easter

If you do get a live bunny, please keep it as a pet forever. Do not release outside if you decide you don't want it. Please take to an animal shelter. Bunnies need someone to take care of them.

CSW - thanks for posting a reminder. Just saw a news story about how the rescue groups brace themselves against the huge numbers of unwanted bunnies that turn up every year after Easter. Most of your little bunnies that are sold here are domesticated and cannot survive out in the parks, etc... if turned loose. They make great pets, but only if you're willing to put the time and effort into providing for their particular needs.

    Again...very tasty pets.

  6. Personally, I don't think the "delicious tasty pets" thing is funny. The OP wasn't pushing a meat vs. nonmeat thing at all, I didn't see a trendy bacon mention or anything about food. This is about responsible pet ownership and addressed a real problem that Seattle parks have faced.

Flyonthewall and Traci, thank you for your support.

I find this blog very frustrating. The amanimity of the internet lets people show their ignorance without revealing who they are. Are people really this callous? I'm am often disappointed on this blog, I just never expect West Seattle neighbors to be so apathetic.

As far as I know killing and eating a rabbit isn't illegal in Washington.

Not sure why people are so offended at the idea, whether or not the person a few posts above was joking or not.

They taste good. Easy to cook, easy animal to clean.

I mean why not round up the rabbits and serve them to the homeless/needy? Rabbit is pretty expensive at the restaurants I've had it.(Doesn't taste as good as when you catch your own of course) So going by that I'm assuming foodies think it's a "high-class" meal?

    Two causes with one stone.

  10. Well, I found the tasty pets crack to be hilarious.

Saying it shows the neighborhood to be callous and apathetic is just a wee bit overreacting to a moment of levity.

I rescued a bunny that was given as a gift for Easter and then neglected by its owner. He's been living and thriving in our backyard since 2007. I don't want to imagine what would have become of him had he stayed in his previous situation. :(

I'm not sure how eating the rabbits isn't a viable option. They taste great...seriously. I mean, it does sound a little funny I guess, but really it's just a practical solution to having one too many around. My wife went down to the Swinery to price them and I was shocked at how much more expensive they are here than in New Orleans at the farmers markets where we used to get them once a week.

The trick is to either eat them paneed with fresh spring greens or to braise them in a creamy mushroom & madiera sauce.

agreed - euthansia (whether followed by consumption or not) is a much preferable option to releasing domestic rabbits, snakes, cats, ferrets, or whatever pet you've grown tired of.
    .
Remember that scene in Roger & Me when the woman kills the rabbit to sell the meat? Michael Moore said he received thousands of angry letters about that, and NONE about the scene a few minutes later where a man is killed by police while on his knees in handcuffs. Absurd.

Hey, I think rabbits are cute and make delightful pets, but I also think they are delicious and make delightful meals.
I love pigs too; they are very intelligent and an extremely personable animal. Unfortunately for them, they are incredibly delicious as well.
Charismatic animals are one of the drawbacks of being an omnivore, you get used to it, or you go veg. No big whoop.

I agree with Traci and the OP. Baby ducks and chicks also fall into this category, as do any animal that is purchased - then discarded - with as little forethought as a chunk of chocolate. Perhaps less so.

A response pointing out that chicks & ducklings are also tasty would indicate that juveniles have logged onto mommy's WSB account. It was only mildly amusing the first time.
