I am disturbed by my daughters' accounts of roving cat gangs congregating by the catnip plant in the neighbor's yard. They have witnessed our cat partaking in this activity. I may need to stage an intervention.

  2. tanyar23: Are you sure an intervention is necessary? Since your cat started hitting the catnip it has been composing some of the best, most creative jazz of its career thus far.

Most likely it is a "dispensary" for medical use!

This reminds me - does anyone need to get rid of a small metal hamster cage or bird cage? Great for putting over the nip so cats can only have so much while protecting the plant itself.

Irukandji, if you can't get a ready made cage, I used to make one from hardware cloth and small metal dowels. With quite a bit of wire to hold it together and bend a top over it. Otherwise the plants just disappeared. You can get the materials from True Value for not too much cost.

  9. i like the birdcage idea...
adds a whimsical touch to the garden..

maybe planting catnip in my neighbors front yard would keep their cat home?

Be careful - catnip is a gateway drug! Next thing you know, you'll be finding this hidden in the back of the closet!

I'm apparently not smart enough to figure out how to get the picture into my post.

This is an age old problem and I'm frankly shocked that you all are just finding out about it. Catnip dates back to pre-opium days in Catghanistan. Where do you think the term "cat burglar" came from?

not to mention the term 'catatonic,' which originated in Catmandu. Although its origins have been obscured by the mists of time, it is thought to refer to the state achieved by ancient felines who imbibed tea made from catnip. Scholars further believe that certain anti-social feline behavior (i.e strolling into the middle of a crowded room and leisurely washing its nether regions) is linked to the resulting intoxication and has been passed down to subesquent generations.

  14. When we first moved into our house, we discovered that the prior occupants had run a similar dispensary for the neighborhood cats. In order to improve their comfort a nice flat tilted rock was provided so they could recline comfortably for some time and more so if it was warmed by the sun; if a cat was lucky enough to get the best seat first.

Unfortunately we had to close up shop with a re-vamped garden and the infiltration of not-so-friendly cats from out of the neighborhood.

If you don't talk to your cat about catnip...who will?

speaking of a catastrophe, I'm wondering whether this renegade group of cats had anything to do with that container full of 70,000 pounds of frozen herring that mysteriously fell off its trailer on the Bridge yesterday ...

Catnip trafficking. Herring truck hijacking (causing a different type of trafficking). Sounds like some kind of feline organized crime ring. I expect Al CAT-pone is the kingpin.

maybe the hijacking was ... wait for it ... a red herring for an attempt to catnap some catnip. Of course, if the trailer had been full of tuna, we would be sure that the cats were involved, esp. if a container of can openers was also hijacked. Maybe we should call on the services of that famous detective, Bulldog Drummond, to investigate.

  21. It's probably just coincidence that a train near Lacey, WA was stopped and relieved of the contents of only one car: the one containing opposable thumbs. I read it on the Cattington Post.

Don't worry, I just heard that Sam Spayed is on their tail (except for the manxes.) He found out they like to hang out at the Kit-Kat Bar and drink Meow-Tais and Tom and Jerrys. They don't drink Zombies cuz they make their fur stand on end (except the black cats drink them on Halloween). You probably don't want to be anywhere near the place when it closes down at 2 a.m.; there have been a couple of fatalities caused by hair balls being coughed up at subsonic speed after too many Hairy Navels.

  25. oh no, maude. We're in big trouble. We've long said that if only they had opposable thumbs, our Cat Army would be hanging at the corner market, drinking 40's and smoking catnip.

    Posted 10 months ago #
  26. Who needs opposable thumbs when they have us as personal slaves?

i feel this sudden need to plant catnip
