Deep Fried PB&J at Summer Fest

  1. At the risk of bumping the topic of Nickelsville off the top of the Forums for five minutes, I didn't want this year's Summer Fest to pass without pausing for a moment to consider the audaciousness of the Deep Fried Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich (available with jelly in a range of flavors). There is also a Nutella version too!

Not inexpensive at $7 a pop. Though I think part of what you're paying for is 235 years of Manifest Destiny that made it possible for a culinary creation like this to exist.

  3. Question for you Christopher. Did you just photograph it, or did you eat it? And if so, did you eat the whole thing, or share it?
    .
This looks and sounds like something that could put a bacon maple bar totally to shame :)

  4. I hear my heart valves closing just looking at it - lol...I, too, want to know if you ate the whole thing?

  5. Didn't know Christopher already had posted this about it .. took a picture in the final hour or so of the fair and included it in main-page narrative. It was definitely all the buzz.

Check your cholesterol level after you eat those things.

  7. Kevin: I ordered the full portion because I thought it would photograph better. But I realized after a few bites that one quarter of that sandwich was really enough.

TR: Sorry. Didn't mean to steal your thunder. Of course I would have shared my image with you for the front page if I had thought you'd have any interest it in.

Jiggers: I can't say I felt good after eating it so you're definitely on to something. However, science has debunked the concept that eating high cholesterol items actually raises your cholesterol. In fact, though it seems counter-intuitive, eating bad cholesterol usually raises the amount of good cholesterol in your body. But with that said, I think that $7 would have been better spent on fresh veggies at the Farmers Market. :-)

Depressing to see this and news of a cardiac arrest on the same day. Shame on me for saying it, as there's likely no causal link. Still, Americans-in-general, moderation. BTW, was there an almond-butter alternative?

I looked at their menu and asked if they had deep fried twinkies. The guy jokingly said if I brought back a twinkie, they would fry it for a price.

hate to break it to y'all, but we are really behind the times in this little backwater peninsula where we don't even have a light rail system so we can zoom over to the big city ... fried PB is old news ... the revolutionary treat sweeping the rest of the country's fairs is ... wait for it ... deep-fried Kool-Aid.

The trick is to wet the powder enough so you can use an ice cream scoop to make a ball of it and then they deep-fry it.

Deep fried Kool Aid, ick. It sounds like a dare. I'll happily stay behind the times.

  14. For some reason I do not mind that west seattle isn't at the forefront of nasty might-as-well-be-injecting-lard-into-ass type novelty food. Texas can keep that honor.

  15. While visiting the festival on Saturday I had one of thier little slices of heaven and it fan-tab-ulous! (purchased a 'half sandwhich' @ $5)

Sorry to say that I had to wait 52 years to tatste something so wonderful, and if it wern't for all the other delicious foods offered (ate from 4 other vendors as well) a second crusted/gooey bit of heaven would have excited my taste buds.

I inquired about almond butter, and although they don't use it they did say it's a viable alternative.

For any of you concerned about my cholesterol (thank you), at 52 my levels have been in the fantastic range my entire life due to good genes and being an endurance athlete since high school.

PS~I ate the whole thing AND licked my fingers!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. While I did not partake in this, I have had this at Patty's Egg Nest up in Mill Creek and highly recommend it if you don't give a crap about your diet:

    Nutter Butter Fresh Toast
Our house specialty! Two slices of thick homestyle bread with peanut butter & sweet cream. Deep fried, topped with our famous Devonshire fresh cream. Served with banana slices. Your choice of bacon OR sausage links.

(also in north Seattle, near Northgate)

  17. If this excites, try a Monte Cristo. Whole 'nother level!

For those unfamiliar, a Monte Cristo is a ham and cheese sandwich, fried, and topped with jam and powdered sugar. C'est la vie!

  18. shed22, just saw a Monte Cristo added to Meanders' new menu! Skylark has a pretty good one too.
