Dead Heads

  1. Those of you that have been in to Full Tilt, know that I love the punk rock. What you might not know is that I am a ginormous fan of the Dead. My wife is calling me a dumb hippy because I am planning a trip down to SF to see them. Just curious if there was anyone else into them on this board. I need some solidarity right now. (ask me sometime, and I will show ya pics of Ann with dreadlocks. Who's the hippy?)

  2. I don't consider myself a Deadhead, but have always enjoyed their music.

I was quite saddened by Jerry Garcia's passing several years ago, and "honored" him by eating a pint of Cherry Garcia ice cream ;-).

So, hold your head high, FT, and enjoy!

And be sure, after truckin' down there and back, to give us a report on what a long, strange trip it's been! ;-)

I thought you were talking about all the logs and debris floating around in the Puget Sound the last few days.

I am a full on Deadhead! Older I get the more I love there music. The tour this spring should be fun- I was thinking about going to the Shoreline show- I grew up Santa Cruz, and my folks still live there so it might be a fun trip.

I have seen Phil and Friends a number of times w/ Warren Haynes on guitar- and it is well worth it! Nothing touches the Dead from 1970-1978, but the stuff the projects they are still putting together easily holds up to some of the shows they played toward the end of there run.

"Wave that flag. Wave it wide and high! Summertime, come and gone, my oh my!"

    Full Tilt,
I’m always grateful to find fellow Dead Heads, especially here in West Seattle. I did tour from 93-95 until Jerry passed away, even went down to SF for the memorial service. My most memorable show was 8/25/93 at Shoreline. It was my 18th birthday, I got a miracle ticket from a friend, and the show was absolutely amazing. Over the last few years my husband and I have attended The Other Ones, The Dead, and Phil & Friends shows. Last year we caught the Phil & Friends Marti Gras show in SF and then the 40th Anniversary of the Dead playing the Crystal Ballroom shows in Portland. Anyways, I can’t wait for the shows at the Forum and Shoreline this year…counting the days. P.S. If you haven’t booked your hotel in Mountain View yet, check out the Hotel Avante, http://www.jdvhotels.com/avante/ We stayed there a few years ago for the Other Ones and they had a Dead package that included room, breakfast, and transportation to and from the show.

If you're going to be in DC by Sunday you can have brunch with Bob and Mickey... and Landslide Al :)

    And both of our Senators.

It's a fundraiser so it will not be free and probably not cheap.

But you can spin in the parking lot until the Capitol police haul you away.

i wish i had known about the anniversary show at the crystal ballroom... i was there for the first one. just the mention of the crystal ballroom makes me wax nostalgic:)

i am not a deadhead, but still one of jerry's many fans.

Full tilt... ann in dreads? i bet she was cute. i am forever grateful we weren't into middle class documentation when i was young... those pics that slipped through anyway are plenty incriminating:)

I wish you would have known too. Any show at the Crystal Ballroom is special, but when the Dead is there....pure magic. Very cool that you were there for the first go round! I have to say that McMenamins has done a great job restoring the Crystal. Here's a link to one of the set lists from the show, as well as, some pics. http://www.phillesh.net/philzonepages/friends_stuff/setlists/080129.html

thank you very much for for the link..

i have been there since McMenamins restored it... and yes, they did a very good job... it a beautiful space...

but it is only a poor reflection of the crystal where i still dance in my head:)

of course, my head these days is only a poor reflection of the woman who embedded the memories:))))

LOL.. it's good i am still me in there ;~>

Landslide Al- that sounds like a fun fundraiser. He is a bigtime deadhead- played them constantly on his radio show on Air America. He is the MC for a great New Years Eve video in the mid-80's at Radio City Music Hall. Jerry does cooking tips during the break- including bacon wrapped waterchestnuts- sounds good!

Absolutely a deadhead, though too settled to tour except for five shows in Massachusetts. (So, maybe I'm not qualified?) However, I'm closer to their age than, I'm guessing, many of you :-) Which makes me very happy for the immortality of the good.

What's your favorite (if you have one) cover band?

Did someone mention Bacon!?! My mother used to make bacon wrapped water chestnuts and bacon wrapped chicken livers for parties (very clearly a different time...) Full Tilt, have no fear, you are not a dumb hippy, you are a community minded, business owner hippy. ;) Wave your flag loud and proud!

  13. FullTilt:

I am a Dead Head by contact -- My somewhat older friends really liked them and now I own many GD, Jerry Garcia, and Phil Lesh and Friends CDs. I like how Phil Lesh especially supports free downloads of his music, and even trying to keep access open to the GD shows that tapers have.

I am flying to LA to go to the Forum show with those same older friends, to see the Dead one more time before they really are.

Sorry but NO, no way, and no. After living in Eugene for may years I can attest that a lot of deadheads are vacuous, jerky, hippies in need of a shower and a new MO. In contrast, Eugene has other "real" hippies who were intelligent, active in the community, and NOT hypocritical. As far as their music, I think it's very average.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  16. ellenator...

it wasn't their music so much as their attitude...

and had you once met jerry you would have been as swept away as any dead head...

i too have a hard time handling the herd of pseudo hippies who think a mission in their own mind is an excuse to avoid personal hygiene and smoke dope..

but most dead heads i know not only bathe but hold down full time jobs.

as do most dope smokers i know...

maybe i just know too many hard working focused people...

perhaps i should get out more ;~>

  22. thee..

yes i really did type that... and i thought it once too...

now, i am just glad there aren't so many incriminating pictures hanging about ;~>

    Full tilt...

There are a lot of people in Eugene who live counter culture and don't fit that profile.

it really saddens me when people focus on all the drug taking that hippies did as though that was all there was to hippies... a bunch of pot smoking drug taking rock and roll kids having a good time.

I didn't drink... didn't smoke... didn't do drugs (at least not until a short period when i was much older)... didn't much care for the scene when people did ... but i lived counter culture when it meant a lot more than a big party ...

living on a communal farm is hard work... community organizing is hard work... running a co-op grocery and bakery is hard work... running a co-op restaurant is hard work.

i bet it's a lot like running a little quality ice cream store... except the responsibility is shared :)

on the other hand.. it's really hard work to make decisions in a co-op:( You don't move till there is consensus...

imagine trying to get anything done that way:)

Was married to a bona fide hippie (hippy?), gawdlovehim. Almost converted him, but alas...

I've never understood the appeal of the Grateful Dead's music; it's deadly uninteresting to me.

(no offense to y'all who love it.)

  24. Okay, just for the record, I went to my fair share of Dead shows and rainbow gatherings and was in SF for my first time when Jerry died (I was staying in my friend's co-op in Berkley, okay, I'm a stinky hippie too.) I went to Everygreen in Oly for crying out loud. BUT I do have to agree with ellenator that a lot of the hippie culture is about as authentic as a day at Abercrombie and Fich. When I had dreadlocks (in Ann Arbor, by the way, another hippie central) I was plenty popular and made lots of money from dumb sorority girls who stopped me in the street and asked if I could "hook them up." I got invited to all the cool drum circles. And the day I cut them off, it all stopped...
I can't imagine going to a show chock full of cheesy teenagers in patch work smocks spare changing for food for their puppy when Jerry isn't even there. I'll stick to radio shows and my old records.

  25. I'm too young to have experienced the Dead in all their glory but my mom was hippie child of the 60s and so I grew up surrounded by that incredible era of music. Every time I walk into the Paramount I imagine Jerry being up on that stage. I was very excited to find an itunes download recently from the July '72 show there... which I have to go listen to again now. :)

LOL... i think there are a lot of outdoor wannabees running around in eddie bauer or REI clothing that look as though they could find themselves in a kayak but who wouldn't risk their expensive outdoor clothing that way:) not to mention their expensive haircuts.. and...

i bet you were cute in dreads.. but unwashed? please tell me you were living on a boat without a shower at the time:)

    Posted 3 years ago #
  27. Not a Panic fan. Don't dislike em, just never ever spent any time listening to them. I hear they put on a good live show.

Oh and that post about having dreads and going to Evergreen, that was Ms Full Tilt. That makes the sorority girl quote a little less creepy now doesn't it.

  28. Full Tilt...

the idea of pic of mrs Full tilt in dreads has sparked an idea for a fun social/fund raising idea having to do with a contest to identify the largest number of current WSB posters.. or anyone else brave enough to volunteer... by their "childhood" pics....

    hehehe...

that could be an entertaining evening... especially if you add in the sugar rush from ice cream and the buzz from beer:)

we could make it a costume event and we could all come as dead heads: ;~>

  29. When I cut off the dreads my friend wanted them so he could be me for halloween. I don't think it ever panned out...but I was bathing regularly, my hair just knots up easily...

FullTilt, I'm from Ann Arbor. How long ago were you there? I was even married to a local musician in the 70's. We used to hang with Iggy, Alice, Bob Seger, MC5, Joe Walsh, etc. We MUST compare notes sometime...

    Posted 1 year ago #
  33. Hey anonyme,
I grew up in Birmingham, MI and hung out in A2 during high school. I moved there for college in 1993. I was there on and off until the end of 1997. I did live with a crazy psychopath who was obsessed with Wayne Kramer and ran punk shows in our basement. My friends lived in what is now known as the Iggy Pop Wax Museum...the house was a co-op, but apparently was once the home of the MC5 and the White Panther Party...
...and randomly enough, I once almost got a job at the Stucchi's ice cream factory.

I can't remember if the White Panthers were related to the Rainbow People's Party. The RPP was anything but a peace-loving, benevolent group. I remember Wayne, and I also hung around with the late Fred Smith, who later married Patti Smith. Kathy Asheton (sister of Ron & Scott Asheton of the Stooges) was my best friend in A2. Obviously you're a lot younger than I am, but it sounds as if the Michigan legends live on...

I actually grew up in East Detroit and went to Grosse Pointe High before moving to Ann Arbor. I was in high school during the 60's race riots. We'd skipped school and dropped acid that day; couldn't figure out why there wasn't a soul on the streets until we turned on the car radio and heard martial law had been declared. BTW, our acid way back then came straight from the personal lab of Dr. Timothy Leary. You can't get it like that any more - not that I'd want to.
I'd better shut up now before I get in trouble...

One last question: did you ever have a Fragel?
