My husband was walking our dog on the beach and found a dead cow hog tied on our beach. We've contacted the police who are on their way.

I'm not kidding. It's awful. The police are actually coming. Said it's bizarre and worth a look.

I'm still trying to get a mental picture of this situation. Do you mean a bovine, "moo" cow or is there some sea life also called a cow that this might be? Oh where is DP and his camera when we REALLY need him? SWIWS indeed! ...and on this beach we have a...Cow?

What a horrible thing to come across! Maybe it washed from Vashon? What a horrible way to pass, drowning is one of my worst fears.

Hope they (the powers that be) look into what happened - some jerk could be up for animal cruelty charges.

Although I appreciate a good sense of humor, the way this creature died is very sad, Garden_nymph.

Sorry HunterG. I agree, it is no way for any life to end! I just checked and both a female whale and a female seal are cows. Are we referring to the farm dwelling, land mammal?

  11. Maybe another Lunar New Year offering? Given the case of the crucified chicken ...

  13. Wow, those last couple of posts were pretty gnarly... So, dead animals equals asians? Is this what WSB is really thinking? At least we know where you stand on the race card...

    Posted 1 year ago #
  14. look up yãy deb or yãy daeb in Cambodian religious history and you find Animism blended with Buddhism much the same way Solstice blended with Christmas in the west. The crucified chicken is one of those offerings that have been molded over time from the animal sacrifice of the animist tradition. It is not mainstream Buddhism and is rare to see outside of tribal rural Cambodia as far as I can tell.

How does a dead cow washing up on a beach equal animal cruelty or drowning? In turn how can any of us speculate that the way the creature died was a horrible way to pass. What if it fell off the back of a rendering truck on the way to the glue factory? Ever think of that? I have to admit it is bizarre that it was hog tied but that doesn't mean it was tied before it died. . . . .With that being said, I bet Taco Bell might be interested in removing the carcass for free.

  16. There has been a lot of flooding this past month. Many rivers go through pasture land, and have outlets into the Sound.

    Posted 1 year ago #
  17. Well, if it was tied up, I am pretty sure it did not wash up from anywhere. While we are at it, what the hell is a "cow hog"?

  18. Hi, Tewl. "Race card"? First time we've been accused of that. We're actually pretty rabid about keeping racism (and sexism, sexual orientation bias, sizism, and other forms of bias/discrimination) off this site, as our commenters are quite aware, unlike many media sites that just look the other way. Doesn't mean we're perfect, though, so if that is how my comment was construed, I apologize. It took a fair amount of research to discover what the White Center sighting sent to us turned out to be - the people who sent it along had no idea and thought it might have been a crime or a case of animal cruelty, and I had no idea either, until a whole lot of searching brought up what Ken mentioned. I mentioned it here for potential context, not out of assumption.

Meantime, since the OP hasn't come back, I'm checking on the report. There is a notation on the 911 incident map of an "animal complaint/injured, dead, dangerous" in the 5900 block of Beach Drive from early this morning. I have a request out to the precinct to ask if that's what that was, what did officers find, and did they turn it over to Seattle Animal Shelter, in which case I will then move on to see if they are investigating.

The cow is still on the beach. The tide didn't wash it away. The police came out last night and thought "perhaps" that it was an older cow that might have died of natural causes and was then used for bait! In any case, I'm hoping someone can rescue this poor animal from the beach. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Most likely bait . People put a dead cow on a raft and the maggots are what the fish eat. So it is a fish attraction device. We actually were fishing for fun with the kids this summer on Lake Washington using standard bait and a couple of guys around us were catching fish at about a 4 to 1 ratio to us and we asked what they were using and sure enough it was maggots. That sparked the whole cow , maggot, fishing discussion.

I should have added put cow on raft. Let it rot. When it's very rotten and infested with maggots dump cow into water. Wait for fish to come. then get to catching the fish. :) now I have to admit I was so grossed out by the rotten dead cow at this point I exited the discussion so I do not know the preffered fish catching method ie scooping up w a net or casting your line and getting them one by one;)

  23. Maggots are typically used only as a fresh water bait.

Wasn't there a movie called Lake Placid or something that used cows as giant pre-historic Crocodile bait?

Maybe we have something swiming around the sound that they aren't telling us about...(insert Jaws theme music)

Probably a carcass that washed out of a ravine during recent flooding. But conspiracy theories are fun too.

  25. Watch for home page coverage in a bit.
We've got one person covering a live cow right now (in a completely unrelated story), and I'm off to cover a dead cow. You just never know what the day will bring.

I never knew that a dead cow would be considered news worthy. Although a cow does serve its purpose well by providing us with much nourishment.

It's not everyday that a cow washes up on our local beaches.

Gotta agree with Tewl that the Lunar New Year comments were a little ignorant/insensitive. WSB, if you were mentioning it for potential context, you probably should have included other potential explanations. It didn't take long for people to come up with the real reason. You probably should have waited a bit for the real answer.

Nothing racist, ignorant, insensitive, bladdadadda about WSB's comment/post. Spend a childhood in New Orleans and you'll have a firm grip on what racism is. ... In the meantime, I'm waiting for word on my Zippy's dinner.

Ditto singular name!!! Our amazing editor is anything but racist or insensitive!!!!try tireless, professional to the inth degree, brilliant ... I could go on but I really don't need tto the readership Wsb has and all of it's awards tell the story much better than I can!!

    Posted 1 year ago #
  34. the editor DID give an explanation, bigmark...you simply didn't read it. There was even a link on the main page to the picture from White Center and the chicken that prompted the remark. Please take your argument elsewhere..it doesn't hold water here. Thanks! :)

Hey JanS, perhaps you should re-read my post. You will see that I said "WSB, if you were mentioning it for potential context..." which was a direct reference to WSB's comment "I mentioned it here for potential context, not out of assumption." So, sorry to say, but I simply DID read it. Perhaps you didn't.

You're certainly free to disagree with me, and I did not mean to suggest that WSB is racist. I've been coming here for years and love it as a resource. The comment just struck me as, perhaps, culturally insensitive. WSB is usually so good at getting to the right answer quickly, and the right answer turned up pretty quickly on its own, so I was a bit taken aback. That's all. Thanks! :)
