I like Crate & Barrel for couches; they have some incredibly comfortable, well-built options bench-made in the U.S. Not West Seattle, though. Village Woodworks has nice wood furniture, but I don't love their couches.

Capers in the Junction will custom order a beautiful sofa for you. They don't have much in stock since they downsized, but they represent Lee & Cisco Bros. furniture collections. Both lines are eco-friendly and very stylish. You can look at all the available styles for each company online. They're not cheap, but in the price range of Crate & Barrel. As a matter of fact, several of C&B's sofas are manufactured by Lee. I'll be following this thread for more ideas!

Don't forget to factor in the delivery fee. This is where local places like Sleepers may have more room to negotiate than big chain stores. Especially if something turns out wrong and you need to return it!

I always head down to the Macy's furniture clearance center down in Tukwila, south of the mall. A couple of times they have had just what I wanted for a very low price. Also, I recently got a small leather sofa from Room and Board. They don't have a store in the greater Seattle area anymore, but there is a good selection online. The sofa I got is beautiful and very well made, and they were really easy to do business with. On the slightly higher end, and also harder to get around here since their shop closed, is Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. Beautiful, well-made stuff. I've met one of the owners, and he told me that the best way to get anything from them that you see online is to deal directly with the Portland store. Obviously, some of these preclude actually sitting in the thing before you decide to buy. So far, I've had good luck with that, though.

Seattle Home Company. They're trying to avoid going out of business so Michael is making deals right and left. He sells some VERY nice furniture. Check their website for details.

I like to look in ikea for ideas. Some of their stuff can be OK too. On the other hand I like this http://www.bassind.com/prod_one.cfm?id=1702&subcatid=1095&catid=1006

My last sofa was ordered from Room & Board, but don't think I'll be doing that again. Their delivery fee is a whopper, plus they add WA state sales tax. One or the other is fine, but not both! Mitchell Gold has some great sofas - thanks for the tip on a Portland store. I've never heard of Seattle Home Company, thanks sacatosh!

Kasala has great sofas. Their outlet store has good discounts too! Its in SODO 1946 Occidental Ave. S.
Side note, I grew up sitting on davenports and not sofas. Anyone else?

Oh yes, I remember davenports! Remember the mandatory black ceramic panthers that accompanied them, often on top of the TV? Actually, "sofa" is making a comeback, having been replaced for the last few decades by "couch". Let's not forget "divan" either. What's next, I wonder? A good topic of research for a dreary Saturday afternoon...

Yeah, ours was either davenport or couch.
Sofas, in my little kid's mind anyway, were the really fancy ones.
I think "Futon", (I know, not exactly the same thing, but serves the same purpose), would have resulted in a blank stare. ;-)

This is where we got ours, and he delivered to our house when it came in. We were able to customize the couch to our space, and I don't think it was any more expensive than going to a regular retail shop.

I second Kasala, we got our last couch there and love it. If you like modern furniture they have some really great stuff and usually great deals at the outlet as well.
