For all that it is worth, and personally Powells opinion at this date and time doesn't do a whole lot for me, Colin Powell gave his endorsement to Barack Obama.

It's too bad Colin allowed to be used as a Bush tool prior to them throwing him under the bus but I am sure he has made his money from that venture.

Regardless, Colin's endorsement adds to the ever growing drop in the GOP support.

  2. I agree. Funny, I used to be such a huge fan of Powell before he became a Bush 'supporter'. I actually put him down as my write-in candidate at Bush's first election....

I'll take it. It's just another example of a republican that can see McCain's campaign for what it is. I would have loved to have seen McCain's (oh hell, even Sarah's or Tucker's) face when he heard the news.

  7. Well there goes the military vote... certainly hacks away at the base. Nothin' like hearin' good news on a Sunday! :)

  8. "In the end the Palin candidacy is a symptom and expression of a new vulgarization in American politics. It's no good, not for conservatism and not for the country. And yes, it is a mark against John McCain, against his judgment and idealism.

I gather this week from conservative publications that those whose thoughts lead them to criticism in this area are to be shunned, and accused of the lowest motives. In one now-famous case, Christopher Buckley was shooed from the great magazine his father invented. In all this, the conservative intelligentsia are doing what they have done for five years. They bitterly attacked those who came to stand against the Bush administration. This was destructive. If they had stood for conservative principle and the full expression of views, instead of attempting to silence those who opposed mere party, their movement, and the party, would be in a better, and healthier, position.

At any rate, come and get me, copper."

    Peggy Noonan, WSJ

I sure hope Colin Powell is ready for the Republican backlash coming his way.

  9. I think he's more than prepared :)

It just came to mind that in the baseball card trading network of political endorsements that Colin Powell is pretty much the Babe Ruth. I didn't grasp until recently how truly important this endorsement is.

Also note that Colin Powell vehemently disagreed with the assertions that Obama's tax policy equals socialism.

    Smart man, very smart man:)

And of course Rush Limbaugh, George Will, and Pat Buchanan had to immediate assert that Powell had zero valid reasons for his endorsement and based it solely on race. What an insult to the man's intelligence. Wondered how long it would take for the character assassinations to begin. Had he endorsed McCain they would have thrown him a parade.

Of course - they have to justify their own racism with smokescreen arguments

Pat's attempt at a smokescreen was especially good. In addition to bringing up race, he claimed that Colin Powell abandoned his party. Excuse me? Like they did 5 minutes after he was put in front of the U.N. with false intelligence on weapons of mass destruction? Disgraceful.

  14. Pat Buchanan makes me sick sometimes, I swear. Rachel Maddow can laugh him off and that usually calms me down, but I had no such luxury today.

Unfortunately even Rachel cannot make me find Buchanan endearing either.

The GOP decided a long time ago to make race a major issue with their party starting with the Southern Strategy with Reagan in the 80's and they continue to use the same tactics today.

It will take a few decades and several election cycles to wash away this dirty linen I suspect.

  16. the fellow who owns the rib joint on ambaum will be happy.

i wondered how he was reconciling his patriotism, serving with colin powell and Obama:)

now he doesn't have to reconcile anything to do the right thing.

  17. What's strange to me (my friend told me this this weekend) is that Rachel and Pat are actually friends. She met him when he was making an anti-gay speech (for those who don't know, she's a lesbian.) She said that his speech was so eloquent that even though she completely disagreed, she was impressed and knew he was a force to be reckoned with...

    ...sounds implausible!

I think they do have a mutual respect for each other. I actually enjoy watching them interact because she keeps him at a pretty respectful level of debate. If he starts to slip into mudslinging, she calls him on it and it appears that he doesn't go there too often with her. His other interviews and commentaries are very telling though.

  22. My favorite part was CP's eloquent criticism of those Republicans who've tried to get people to think that Obama's Muslim. Rather than just stop with pointing out that Obama's always been Christian, he takes the (much more important, to my mind) step of adding, "And what if he were?" His story about the mother of the young American (Muslim) soldier killed in Iraq is straight to the point. His chastisement of the party members who've tried to heighten this divisiveness should make them hide their heads in shame.

  23. I have been reading some of the comments on articles on ABC and wow, did he get to the conservatives.
