Cockroach treatment question

  1. Just discoverd some in one of the rental properties, a vacant apt in a 4-plex that is being COMPLETELY gutted and remodeled.

I'm requesting your thoughts regardinmg treating it ourselves (and how) or calling a reputable pest control company and letting them do their thing.

Thanks in advance for sharing your time and thoughts.

  2. Go pro. Roaches need a repeated treatment program. Fleas would be a DYI, roaches are a never ending DYI landlord issue.

Ditto on the go pro advice. You need to treat multiple times based on the cockroach egg hatching cycle time.
If the appliances are there you need to check the back of the stove and refrigerator and also (this part is creepy) check the seals in the refrigerator and freezer doors. I had this issue with a second-hand fridge I bought when I lived in New Zealand. I couldn't eradicate the cockroaches because [I later learned] the egg hatch cycle was much longer in the colder temps of the door seals so I wasn't treating at the appropriate intervals. At least that's what the exterminator told me when I finally called. With his advice I was finally successful.

Ugh ... sorry to hear that. Haven't seen them ever in Seattle but know them well from Kansas and Louisiana days. Only solution I found was using a professional exterminator on, I believe, a biannual basis. Ugh ...

Sounds like a job for professionals. Our building is about 6 yrs. old and started up 2-3 yrs. ago. The first one I saw came up out of my key board late one night. They like electronics. They used traps and a glue like stuff, no odor. I also bought a plug-in zapper. It does work. I saw tiny baby early one morning, went out and got new stickup traps. Haven't found anything since. About that time they had treated several apartments above me. They appear somewhere in this building every now and then. I can imagine how they got stirred up with sbre's renovation going on. Don't be surprised if they show up in other apartments. They like cluttered or dirty apartments.

I've been told ours here are small compared to ones in the southern states.

I could go into great nauseating detail about a house we owned in Texas+roaches....but I will spare you the details.

During the remodel bring in a pest professional to blast those roaches to kingdom come. After that--boric acid. It is cheap, easy, not an insecticide, and will keep any forthcoming roaches dead by gritting up and clogging their airways (roaches breathe through their legs).

Worked for me in Texas, it'll work for you in the less roach friendly Seattle.

Roaches looove electric appliances and wiring. If they're in the building you'll need to have sprayed behind switchplates and electrical outlets, the back of the stove and the fridge. I had them in my radio and toaster too. They are evil little mofos.

  7. The people have spoken and 'going pro' it is!

    Thank you all.

In the last 24 hours I have learned so much about these disgusting little creatures, and have even formed a (twisted?) sense of respect for them for their ability to adapt, withstand and endure.

A 21-pesticide-spray salute for them it shall be!!!
