wakefloodParticipantSpent a number of hours with a handful of 20-something’s this weekend. They’re HS grads and smart enough to be sorting things out logically. But here’s what scared the hell out of me.
Most if them weren’t really sure if humans are involved much in climate change. They’re distrustful of science and assume the whole thing is basically a he said/she said. Even if it’s happening, it’s a cycle and maybe humans are making it worse but, you know, probably not much.
I asked what they were basing their opinion on and their response was simply that’s how they parsed what they gathered from mass media. AND THEY WERE SOLIDLY CONFIDENT IN THEIR ASSUMPTIONS.
And if you ever wonder if buying “science” and propagandizing the results is effective, have no doubt. It is. And it made me sick to my stomach.

JanSParticipantwell, if it was on the internet, it MUST be right :(

SmittyParticipantMy guess is that most young people’s politics are pretty much in-line with their parents. So, despite their answer regarding mass media, they are probably influenced at a greater amount by their upbringing. (Not sure what the current AGW split is in Seattle area, however). Sounds like your sampling might be a little skewed – at least from what I hear and see.
Politics, religion, fast food choices, manners (or lack thereof) etc.
I would love to see some data showing how these attitudes start to stray as they get older and make their own life choices.

JoBParticipantSmitty..
i will agree with you only if we stipulate that the parents of these twenty somethings must have been fans of of FOX news ..

Probably, JoB. Although in our household the kids are used to MSNBC in the background. I want them to hear all sides(which is really any station BUT Fox!) – and they most definitely would have been on the non AGW side.

skeeterParticipantWell I’ve got over a decade on top of a twenty-something and I’m confused too.

Is this study propaganda as well? I’m not trying to be a wise guy. I honestly don’t know what is propaganda and what is science.
September 22, 2014 at 10:34 pm #813936
wakefloodParticipantC’mon, Skeets, you read the article and you conveniently left out the lede:
“Both authors were quick to point out that their study does not in any way refute that temperatures globally are on the rise or that humans are responsible for that trend.
“This doesn’t say that global warming is not happening,” Mantua said. “It doesn’t say human-caused climate change isn’t happening globally. It’s a regional story”.
Do you not take them at their word?
September 22, 2014 at 10:59 pm #813937
skeeterParticipantYes, I take them at their word. They are saying that the warming of the West Coast is caused by natural variability and is not related to human behavior. But their study is limited to the West Coast. They do not come to any conclusions about the causes of warming anywhere other than the West Coast.
September 22, 2014 at 11:19 pm #813938
wakefloodParticipantThey bother to add that because, why? Maybe because NOAA has done studies that support man-made global climate change and they don’t disagree? They did what scientists do, they only commented on the research they were publishing and left it to other studies to speak to other questions. Questions already responded to by their fellow NOAA scientists.
From NOAA:
“A large body of evidence supports the conclusion that human activity is the primary driver of recent warming. This evidence has accumulated over several decades, and from hundreds of studies.”
September 23, 2014 at 6:05 pm #813939
wakefloodParticipantAnd just because it’s in the news today. Eric Schmidt, Google Chairman responded to a question in a presser:
“The company has a very strong view that we should make decisions in politics based on facts — what a shock. And the facts of climate change are not in question anymore,” Schmidt continued. “Everyone understands climate change is occurring and the people who oppose it are really hurting our children and our grandchildren and making the world a much worse place. And so we should not be aligned with such people — they’re just, THEY’RE JUST LITERALLY LYING.”

SmittyParticipant“Both authors were quick to point out that their study does not in any way refute that temperatures globally are on the rise or that humans are responsible for that trend.
Jeez, wouldn’t you? People with pitchforks would be out to discredit them in no time.
KoS would find a 2nd cousin twice removed who worked for Shell in the summer of ’84 or something……
