Christmas lilies deadly to cats

  1. Every year I like to put out this warning. If I can save one life with it, I will be happy. Lilies are so deadly to cats that one bite is enough to kill most house cats. I still remember having to comfort a client many years ago who didn't realize this and lost her young and beautiful cat to kidney failure from lily toxicity. Please don't bring them into your home if you have kitties.

    Thanks for the info! Are poinsettas also poison to cats? Or is Christmas lily just another name for them.

  4. Poinsettias are very mildly toxic. If cats or dogs eat enough they can get vomiting or diarrhea but they don't kill. Any of the lilies are very deadly to cats including the beautiful ones sold at the farmer's market in the summer and Easter lilies. There is a good photo of what a Christmas lily looks like in the article link.

  5. Thanks for the info - I actually didn't know that about lillies. Fortunately I'm so allergic to them that they don't enter the house, but good to know if a bouquet arrives with them. Gotta keep the kitty safe!

    As Sue mentioned, they can be nearly fatal to people as well, esp. to someone with asthma, as many people are highly allergic to the stench they put out. Paperwhites and similar flowers that are popular around Easter have the same effect. I'm all for protecting the species of animals, plants, etc. that inhabit the earth, but these things should be wiped out of existence ... I'm thinking a flamethrower would be a good defensive weapon.

    Also worthy of note;
    Lucky Bamboo, which is often given as a gift, is not bamboo at all but rather a type of lily. As such, they are also toxic to cats.

    Lena, thank you for posting this information.

    Remember...if you grow lilies in your garden, those are also deadly to your cats and/or neighbor/free roaming cats. I stopped growing them in my yard 10+ years ago and Furry Faces does not sell them at our plant sales for this reason.
