Chess in West Seattle?

    Hello Neighbors,

Is there any interest in the possibility of having a weekly chess night in West Seattle? The elementary schools here have chess programs, but what really makes the difference is playing more chess.

I'm not asking for myself necessarily, because I haven't won a game at home in more than a year.

If someone were to suggest a free location, I would be more than happy to either purchase or get donations for chess sets.

I would envision it as a casual affair where beginners could learn chess in an unthreatening way, but more skilled players would also be able to play against each other or teach less skilled players.

I have been thinking about this for a while, but I hadn't thought to post it here until yesterday.

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

  3. Jeremy,

Not sure if the Library will be supportive [as instructional chess requires talking -- but who knows]

I picked up chess exactly 1 year ago, and have been playing online [www.gameknot.com] which is fun, and while I payed the subscription price, it can be free [ads, limited number of games, etc]

But I was also looking for a local chess club, much for the same reasons. The only thing I found was in Shoreline...which is fine, but not W. Sea.

If you need help, etc, give me a shout via email:::

    Thanks for responding everyone.

Personally, I think it would be great if it were just a chess time, but I'll look into the game night.

  6. i ws thinking you might find other chess players at the game night.

i am thinking of attending to look for a casual backgammon group... and a casual go group...

do casual chess, backgammon and go groups exist?

  7. The Game Afternoons we have scheduled are, indeed, in the meeting room upstairs--so no trouble with talking.

We haven't had any chess players mention an interest, and we didn't bring a chessboard last time, but chess counts as a board game--you're welcome to come.

    Backgammon and go count, too!

If you're looking to play a specific game such as chess, go, or backgammon, consider bringing your own set to be sure one will be available--or email me at swt-friends@wlonk.com to tell me you'll be there and I can make sure we bring one. I can also post a list of specific games requested, so people can respond if there's an opening for a player for a specific game, or an opponent needed.

I understand this is not the weekly, focused group you're seeking--but maybe could be a start?

If anyone wants to play, send me a private message. I am not great, but pretty good. Play at a coffee shop.

I've thought about this some. I'd love for a coffee shop time, because of the access to drinks, casual atmosphere, and lack of awkwardness when only a couple show up. The tricky thing is, "where?"

The problem is that chess players are lousy coffee shop guests, because they take up a table for a LONG time and just get lots of refills.

At the same time, the Uptown on Delridge and Andover has lots of room and tables, and would seem good.

I'm a local chess instructor and just-short-of-expert tournament player. I'd love to play anyone. Weekends are best during the school year.

Uh, getting too specific you mean?

And then I go to jiffy lube today, and need transmission service too, and so I'm sitting there reading a chess book. And another guy in the waiting area says, "You play chess?" Turns out he played for Chief Sealth in Metro League and the State Championship in the late 80's/early 90's. Name of Lin or Lynn (not sure how spelled).

    There's people out there!

There was a chess club in West Seattle back in the early 80s they merged with North Seattle Chess Club. I think it was a mistake for them to do that they were on they were on the verge of folding at the time

  16. I was looking online for a West Seattle chess club of some kind and found this posting. Just throwing this out there, but I'm at Freshy's coffee shop 3 or 4 evenings per week (and frequently saturdays as well). I'm usually just playing chess online and avoiding actual work, so if anyone out there (dellinger?) wants to pull up a chair and play, I'm in. I'm not a tournament-quality player by any means, but I'm well past beginner levels. Shoot me an email at kdmr.dax@gmail.com, or just show up with a board. If I see you I'll ask for a game.

I recently happened upon a chess group that meets up in White Center every Monday. Company Bar hosts Rat City Royals Chess Club for a night of chess playing and rock and roll. Chess starts at 8pm and all are welcome. There on Facebook - Rat City Royals Chess Club - Company Bar 9608 16th Ave. SW Seattle, WA 98106 White Center, USA
