"Check Your Mate" Board Game Afternoon

  1. Come and celebrate Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year at the Friends of Southwest Library's "Check Your Mate" Board Game Afternoon this Sunday from 1 pm to 4:30 pm.

Not just for chess players, not just for those with mates!

Members of the Friends plan to bring a variety of board games and will be available to assist with learning to play them. (Examples? Scrabble, Catan, Dominion, Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, Once Upon a Time--if your favorite isn't listed, send us an email to suggest it, or suggest it on our Facebook Event Wall (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=299883231372), or bring a copy if you have one!)

We have a few games for younger children. Most are for 10-and-up.

Let us know what games you’d like to play, learn, or bring! Drop-ins are welcome, but we can plan better if we know you’re coming! Email us at swt-friends@wlonk.com.

  2. I think the decline of card games and board games are a net loss to society and the people who may have played them.

Sure you can play games on-line, but some of my fondest memories are of playing "Mille-Bourne", "Diplomacy", "Risk" or card games like "Zion Check"...I doubt the online version would work the same. Thanks for organizing this.

  3. You're welcome! We do have lots of FTF fun; I hope you'll join us!

I'm not so sure card and board games are on the decline, though--game design has advanced: the new games are maybe even more fun than our old favorites. But they're still fun, too! "Zion Check"...hmm. I'll have to look that one up...

  4. An alternative to eating chocolate and watching the Olympics--exercise your brain and have fun!
