Hi - just wanted to post an FYI for anyone in this area (47th Ave SW, near the ferry) that my car was broken into last night. Nothing was stolen but the doors were left ajar and things were scattered around the floorboards. It was unlocked so it was just opened, not literally "broken" into. Anyway - just wanted to let people know. I don't know if it's better to leave cars unlocked so the windows don't get broken, and leave no valuables in the car. But it's creepy to think of someone in your car while you're asleep inside.

My car was also "broken" into last night. Things were scattered around and a few items were taken like sunglasses, 2 jackets and a few cds. When my husband was driving to work he found our jackets laying in the street. They must have looked through the pockets and didn't find anything and decided to toss them, thank god. Later I also found my cheap sunglasses broken in the middle of the street, a glove belonging to someone and another pair of sunglasses. By I looks of things I knew we couldn't be the only victims.

  4. Hi all - sorry to hear about what happened. It's OK to post these reports here but we do also invite people to e-mail us their reports so we can post them on the main news page, where they will be seen by even more people - you don't need to provide your name but a general location (near street x and x) is important. (See the reports linked from our Crime Watch page - I put a link to this topic there last night but now that yet another person has added a report, I thought I'd better say something.)

Also important to make sure you have reported these crimes to police. Anyway, our address: editor@westseattleblog.com
    Thanks.

  5. Postscript on this one. It does take several days for the reports to make it through the SPD system and be cleared for media release. I got them late Monday and published them in a roundup of reports on Tuesday - turns out that on the south half of the Peninsula, there were SEVEN last Thursday night/Friday morning.

Mine and my husbands vehicles were both broken into on the 100th block of 31st Ave SW. Our story is the same as Rugsmith's and Kwilly1's. Nothing really taken except loose change and chash. Very uneasy feeling. My husdand's a contractor and all his tools were left, the creeps actually left a expensive roof nailer??? Weird. We turned it over to the cops for the owner to claim it.

We too have fallen victims to unlocked cars resulting in our favorite things getting stolen and the thieves leaving an exchange for what he took (a cell phone and gym shorts). This occurred on 2/23/09 on the Andover/Fauntleroy block near the pedestrian bridge. This is the second time to us and the 4th time in the neighborhood over the last 6 months. At least the first time we got pumpkins in the car.

If any of you got your Verizon Razr stolen, our friendly thieves left it in my protection. Will eventually make it to the Verizon store.

DeedleDee, call the police and give the phone to them. There might be calls on it they can trace or other information that would be helpful.

True and gone down that path and not too responsive. I'm talking about how we can get better protection for our neighborhoods. I would like to see some more lights on the street and know who to contact to get the fence line locked up. I'll sit on the sidelines to get my baselines and now it's time to step up for the greater good. Wish I had a HERO super power. :-)

DeedleDee, when we had a rash of home burgarlies in our area and acted as a neighborhood. It does take one person to start the ball rolling. We sent flyers to the neighborhood and organized a neighborhood meeting. Nice thing was we met everyone (some for the first time). After hearing many of the burgarlies and car prowls that were unreported, we got the Police Department and Mayor's office involved. Primarily because there were so many, and also because the were cyclical. There are some great resources to getting your neighborhood as your first line of defense. I would love to send you some information on how to get started. You can email me at reclaimgatewood@gmail.com
