Can anyone recommend a good Chinese Restaurant in WS?

  1. I really miss Ho-Win's tasty letter "A". Granted we never actually ate there as the atmosphere was less than desirable but they always delivered it nice and hot, and in a timely manner, to the comfort of our own home...we so miss that! :-(

Lee's Asian in the Junction - great food and service.

  4. Yeah, I checked Yelp and nothing compares to Ho-Win. I know Lee's Asian is good but it's not American Chinese cuisine and unfortunately, they don't deliver. :-( I guess we'll just have to venture out and go down to the International District and see what we can find.

OH GOD NO. Don't go to Yen-Wor Village. Just don't. I tried it once and it was horrid. Thought maybe that was a bad day in the kitchen, so tried them again another time. Even worse than the first. Mushy vegetables, gristly meat, no flavor besides salt. Even their chow mein was bad. Chow mein is one item that is always good, even from grocery store Chinese delis, but Yen Wor's was disgusting.

I also enjoyed Ho-Win the times I ordered from them; I especially liked that their veggies were never overcooked. I wish Lee's Asian delivered.

  7. Depends on what dish you are looking for. And what your favorite aspect of that dish is. I keep forgetting the name of the teriyaki joint in lower 42nd-facing Jefferson Square (Nikko?) but their kung pao chicken is really interesting. As is our favorite neighborhood teriyaki joint's version of the same, New Teriyaki & Wok (just south of West Seattle Thriftway) ... or try their General Tso's Chicken low on sauce, extra-spicy.

  8. Sorry luckymom30 - Yen Wor has the worst food ever but apparently it is great if you're interested in a night of Karaoke.

  9. Thanks WSB - I forget the name of that place too. It's next to Subway, right? I get their sweet 'n sour chicken to go for lunch sometimes and it's good. I should try their kung pao chicken too, huh? Maybe we'll just have to try a few things on their menu and get them to go.

sun-e -- other side of the street, across from Subway. It's in the same mini-strip mall as the gas station and the (Domino's?) pizza place.

  11. I think we are talking about two different places and two different Subways! The New Teriyaki is next to the gas station and Domino's Pizza on California just south of the Thriftway (across from a Subway). The other place people are talking about is next to a Subway that's "under" Jefferson Square, on 42nd and Alaska.

Mmm... New Teriyaki & Wok is delicious. I don't go there often, but almost always order their yakisoba. Husband gets their chicken breast teriyaki. Need to try their other dishes sometime.

  13. Hmm, I tried New Teriyaki & Wok once and it was okay but didn't thrill me. Maybe give it another go? I usually just go down to the ID...

The Teriyaki restaurant at Jefferson Square (next to Subway)is Nikko Teriyaki. Although I believe the prices are higher than on the Urban Spoon site, there are pictures of their menu options.

Do any of these places do dim sum?

  16. @add - you are right about there being two different Subways and to which one is next to the restaurant that I'm referring but people, people, people... we digress. As much as I appreciate reading about some great restaurants in WS, I was hoping to find a great American Chinese food (Teriyaki is typically Japanese food) restaurant in WS. Thanks for all your help...keep 'em comin'!

sun-e, the thing about New Teriyaki & Wok is it's a hybrid teriyaki/American Chinese restaurant. My husband loves to get the teriyaki chicken/Mongolian beef combo. They do a tasty fried rice, too.

  18. @SarahScoot - I'll give them a try. Do you know if they deliver?

They don't deliver. :-( What is it about W.S. Asian restaurants not delivering, anyway?

  20. We are so desperate, they don't need to care--no one outside of our fair peninsula will deliver here. I seem to recall a middleman (at one point) would bring various places non-takeout (including Lee's) to you but that might have bit the dust in 2008...

  21. That's what was so great about Ho-Win - they delivered and they delivered it hot and tasty...I so miss them. :-(

  22. Happy Garden in Burien is quite good. They deliver (at least to SE west seattle, not sure how far north or west they will come) and their food is tasty and plentiful and arrives HOT, though they usually take longer than the estimate. I definitely recommend trying them out.

I don't see an online delivery feature when I Google from my computer. However, when I search from my phone I found an online ordering site. I've used the site a few times and it's easy and fast.

  23. Thanks Aim! We go to Burien at least once a month so next time we go, maybe sooner than later, we will definitely check this place out...it looks really good. :-)

  24. Thanks again Aim! We went there last week for dinner and it was great. The atmosphere is not the best though - the lighting is way too bright...need to wear shades. Their service is really fast so I think the next time we're in Burien we'll just make our order to go since I'm pretty sure we live too far away for them to deliver...darn it!

  25. We also drive down to Happy Garden in Burien and really like it. The only caveat at this time of year is that it's COLD in there - I always make sure I'm wearing layers.

I recently discovered Lee's and liked it quite a bit. I got the Honey Walnut Shrimp, yum, yum, yum.

My favorite Chinese is Shanghai Garden down in International District. Not going to work if you are looking for delivery but worth the trip if you have time for dining in (and it's really not that far).

  27. Recently tried out this place. Pretty good Chinese dishes and I will be working my way through the rest of the menu. Note they deliver after 5 pm and you can order online :)

Next part of the menu to try... Sushi delivered...

I tried the mongolian beef at Yummy Teriyaki recently. While it was tasty, it wasn't remotely what I expect for mongolian beef. I do really like Yummy so will stick with their spicy chicken & gyozo, etc.

  29. I wanted Dim Sum. I took the West Seattle monorail downtown. Went to Chinatown and enjoyed a feast at the Harbor City Restaurant, on 7th and Canton. After a fabulous meal I walked down to the waterfront, rode the trolley to a few places, caught a show at the pier. Finally I jumped onto the Water Taxi and caught a bus home.

Oh sorry, it was a dream.

But there are plenty of places in Chinatown. Ho Win's atmosphere was AWFUL. I go to Lee's and Yummy Teriyaki.

  30. @Nighthawk - Yes, Shanghai Garden is my husband's favorite place to get Kung Pao Chicken for lunch but unfortunately they're not in WS.

@Ken - Thanks for the link to Yummy Teriyaki. Their menu looks pretty good. Not quite the combos of Chinese food that we're looking for but it's nice that they deliver so we'll definitely give them a try.

@HMC Rich - Love the dream...if only, huh? Yeah, we never actually ate at Ho-Wins; just had our favorite letter "A" delivered. Lee's has good food and the atmosphere is better than Ho-Win's for sure but we still don't really care for it so we wish they delivered. Guess we'll just have to get it to go and pick it up ourselves. :-(

Thanks everyone for all the help on our quest. :-)
