I know there are a lot of great photographers out there in WS ... I'm looking for a recommendation for a "starter" dSLR camera for my teenage daughter. It doesn't have to have all the bells & whistles, but she wants to have the option of manual focus. All of the cameras under $300 I've discovered so far only have auto-focus capability. Any ideas??

I would spend the extra 100 bucks and get the entry level canon eos or nikon d line. They have manual and auto functions and are more than enough for the amateur casual photographer. I love my canon eos rebel.
Suggest going to Glazers downtown to look over their used camera. If you are seeking a manual focus, that tells me that you may be seeking a camera that is more than a DSLR that is basically used as a point and shoot (its amazing how expensive some people's camera, and they only use the "automatic" settings). I am a Nikon user and there are a pretty good selection of good Nikon camera and lenses, adn the staff at Glazers is very good at spending the time to help understand the capabilities of what they sell. Good luck. My parents bought me a camera when I was a teen, and many, many years later, I am so appreciative that I learned the art.
I would agree on the used idea. I would look at the canon t3i the bodies are a little smaller than the regular size DLSR and fit in smaller womens hands better while having lots of features for her to learn. If you looked on Craigs List for a used one I would be happy to make sure it is working properly

I just stepped into the DSLR arena myself and got the Canon T3i as mentioned above. Love it!
Thanks everyone! We are definitely open to a used camera, thanks for the lead on Glazer's. I'll take a look at craigslist, too (@clark5080, thanks for the offer to take a look at a potential one). I know that the Canon T3i/Rebel is a great choice, but the only ones I've seen are at least $450 (new) and I'm not willing to spend that much on a new teenage hobby quite yet. :)

You should be able to get a good Canon 30d or 40D or maybe a t2I for your price range
Kenmore camera also has used deals and is worth checking with. They are off the Bothell highway/Lake City way but they have always been helpful to me.
Ever find a camera for your daughter? All the suggestions above are great ones. Glazer's and Kenmore Camera are both great camera shops to buy from (new and used). Don't think of it as a short term hobby for your daughter, they'll most likely make it a lifelong hobby or career. I started out with film back in the day and have since owned various digital cameras, 2 which have been DSLR's. My hobby has allowed me to shoot weddings for friends that ran a low budget of (we can't pay but we like your work) to actually being published by Subaru. So, if you have not found one yet, I'd say it might be worth the little extra cash to get a DSLR with manual override.
