  1. Here's just a few of the purchases I avoided making this year:

☺ Big screen TV (Television is dreck anyway. Do I need 125" of dreck?)
    ☺ Small screen TV
    ☺ In-between screen TV
☺ Kindle (That's what books are for, remember?)
☺ Gift certificate for $100 worth of crap
☺ Uncle Milton's Deluxe Ant Farm
    ☺ Jewelry, assorted
☺ Cat toys (Hey, everything I OWN is a cat toy, all right?)
☺ Fancy crystalware (Prolly just break.)
☺ Radar detector (Avoid tickets: drive slow.)
☺ MP3 player (Prolly just lose it.)
    ☺ Leather jacket
☺ H-O gage model train set
    ☺ Orange Julius
    ☺ 5 gal. bucket of chocolate-covered pretzels
    ☺ Solar-powered wine opener
☺ Power tools (Prolly just have to use them.)

I'm kinda sad now, actually, going over this list.
I really wanted the Ant Farm.

  2. I have a free range ant farm in my yard.

  3. Idea for Gina: Get people from foreign countries to sponsor the ants in your yard. For only $20 a month, sponsors will receive a photo of "their" ant, along with an individual progress report.

DBP - why do you hate the economic recovery? Are you trying to single handedly bring it down, one non-purchase at a time? :-)

  5. Hey don't get me wrong; I'm all about recovery.

♪ I read magazine articles about it.
♪ I go to a group three times a week.
♪ I watch the Recovery Channel on TV.

    It's the "economic" part I can't do.

  6. I confess..
    I assist the economy

    but not on black friday
    and not this christmas

if it isn't about spending time with people i care about.. i'm not doing it.

i may find myself fired as a grandmother...
but that's a risk i am going to have to take :)

  7. I got up at the crack of 10 to buy a used rug off craigslist. My one concession to Black Friday I suppose.

I DIDN'T buy christmas gifts-not a damn one-I spent all the money on a new car for myself! Hows that for selfish AND stimulating :)

i didn't buy a bunch of stuff i can't afford, and i didn't rub elbows with a bunch of people who would run over their own dogs just to get to a sale.

I participated in "White Friday". I bought my season pass for The Summit at Snoqualmie.
So friday we snowboarded all day. BRING IT!

  11. Apropos of redblack's comment, comes this item from today's Times:

    LOS ANGELES —

A woman suspected of showering Black Friday shoppers with pepper spray surrendered to authorities but was released pending further investigation after she refused to discuss the incident, police said Saturday.

The woman, whose name was not released, is suspected of firing pepper spray into a crowd in order to clear a path to a crate of Xbox video game players that were being unwrapped late Thanksgiving night at a Walmart in the upscale Porter Ranch section of the San Fernando Valley.

The suspect got away in the confusion, and it was not known if she bought one of the Xboxes. Ten people suffered minor injuries from the spray and 10 others sustained cuts and bruises in the ensuing chaos.

  12. yay- managed not to buy anything Friday, except some cheap mall Thai food takeout downtown. did spend money at the carousel (supposedly goes to help foster children); we did spend money at the gingerbread houses (supposedly to help JDRF). we made up for our non-spending by buying 4 new tires on Saturday. judging from the look on the service technician's face when he saw our worn tires, that purchase benefited us and any-one who drives near us. I wish that was all of our holiday spending, but who knows.
