Bring Top Pot to Downtown West Seattle?

  1. I know we've been having a months-long discussion of what is the best doughnut in Seattle. See this forum: http://westseattleblog.com/blog/forum/topic.php?id=4324

But I was wondering how many people would agree that West Seattle has a dearth of good doughnuts, besides the supermarket variety? We have the best cupcakes, the best French pastries, and the best bagel selection in the city, but at least my family is tired of the trek east to get a doughnut.

(Side note: Original Bakery batch size seems geared to their immediate neighborhood, they always seem to be out of most of their doughnuts by the time we get there from Alaska Junction. And we have to drive there--would prefer a shop within walking distance of Alaska Junction, and for us, even the Admiral District is considered walking distance, maybe even Morgan Junction...)

So, who would support a campaign to bring a Top Pot into Alaska Junction/Admiral District/Morgan Junction in the future?

Who'd argue against a campaign like that? I would be even more on board if they crumbled bacon on top, or put a whole slice of bacon on a maple bar.

  3. And an off-leash Trader Joe's!

  4. yeah flowerpetal! we need a Voodoo Donuts here!

@garyn: my brother swears the donuts at Dona Queen on 4th Ave S @ Spokane are great, even if the outside looks skeevy.

Red Cup on California carries Mighty-O donuts and pops them in the freezer on the hot days. FABULOUS frozen Mighty-Os!

I like Mighty-O just fine, but they are a completely different animal from Top Pot IMO. I would love to see a Top Pot in WS!

We used to live a couple blocks from the Original Bakery, and I could get an ultra fresh chocolate-glazed donut when I went to the bus stop each morning. Oh, they are sooooo good! But garyn is right, they sell out very quickly. I think WS could handle both Top Pot and the Original without the Original suffering.

Thank JenV, I couldn't remember the source of the bacon maple bars.
And heck yeah, there's room for the Original Bakery and Top Pot. I could shade my calendar according to which day I was to go to which bakery.

What donuts does Starbucks carry? I could have sworn I've bought a box of Top Pot old fashioned donut holes there??? They were good. I second the Dunkin Donuts! My husband would 3rd 4th and 5th it!

    Posted 2 years ago #
  10. If only Sophie's Donuts (used to be on East Lake, maybe 6 years ago?) would re-open. She had the BEST glazed donuts. I think she had a buttermilk batter...not those cotton candy-like glazed donuts they have at some donut places I won't mention. All grease and sugar and air. Ugh.

But, since that probably won't happen, I second (or third? --I've lost count) Top Pot. Their old fashioned glazed are very good, and the apple fritters are delicious. It would be a fabulous addition to the suite of delectable breakfast places in the Junction, and we would truly never have to leave West Seattle again....

And I know Dunkin Donuts has their followers, but do we want to bring another national chain into the Junction?

  11. As an old East Coast transplant (as many years there as here now) I'd welcome a Dunkin Donuts here - Krispy Kreme just doesn't cut it. Top Pot would be good too..... but please no Tim Horton's!!

Oh my lilith, Sophie's had THE BEST DONUTS EVER!! It is so sad that shop closed up. I wish I'd eaten more donuts while I lived in that neighborhood.

I really think the closest Dunkin Donuts is in Arizona- I'm going to pray to the donut gods that one will re-open in Washington state soon!

There are a few Dunkin Donuts in Washington..... I know for sure there's one in Federal Way/Des Moines by Midway on Pac. Hwy. Is there still one in the Broadwayish area? By a record store on a hill by the freeway........ I think. I can see it in my head........

I think Starbucks does carry Top Pot, I am not too into donuts but do like a plain old fashioned donut but those are hard to find so i will settle for the sbux one with glaze, but i prefer no glaze. I have memories of riding my bike to winchells donuts in westwood villiage as a kid and getting a well 2 plain old fashioned donuts with my change.:) I also do not like krispy kremes at all.

See, that's why we need two doughnut spots, because I prefer "airy" over dense. Actually, I like "eggy" the best - growing up, had Winchell's (remember them? 24-hour!) krullers every week. I have a hard time finding a good kruller.

edit: LOL, cclarue for the simultaneous Winchell's nod!

cclarue, The Original Bakery does a nice old fashioned, no glaze.
Re: Top Pot @ Sbux, if you don't get there early you won't get one at all.

At the Dunkin Donuts website there is a store locator. Good luck in making it work... unless there are no stores closer than 50 miles to downtown Seattle.

    Posted 2 years ago #
  21. Dunkin Donuts, it's worth the trip! Anyone remember the old slogan (and I have to admit I ate nearly a dozen one night in my crazy youth)- shoot I'd start a franchise here if enough interest in WS!!!!

I wasn't a big donut fan until the discovery of Bacon Maple Bars! While the chances of VooDoo coming to Seattle are slim to none, I'll settle for a good maple bar that I can add my crispy bacon to...

I think you are referring to the one that was on MLK Jr. Way near McClellan. Apparently it is gone. There are only DDs in 34 states. I'm thinking WA is not one of those. Here's a link to the store locator... and I'm thru with this part of the topic. I don't even like Dunkin Donuts!

  25. Between Bakery Nouveau, Cupcake Royale and Shoofly we don't need a doughnut shop we need a big pants store.

But barring that I'd like to see them bring a franchise of The Doughnut Plant to West Seattle. They are TRULY remarkable doughnuts, based on a 1930's yeasted doughnut recipe. Absolutely doughnuts of the gods!

I'll second Pigeonmom's endorsement of The Original Bakery and say this -

    Top Pot?

    Why not a Tim Horton's?

    Posted 2 years ago #
  29. Wow, there must be a lot of interest in doughnuts around here, 27 posts in 8 hours! I swung by Top Pot today and put in a good word for us.

And if we keep everything within walking distance, we can avoid the big pants store!

Which reminds me of the superhighway-to-West-Seattle notice I got in the mail today... Anyone want to tell our "green" mayor that we need to push past the car paradigm? Geez! Can someone clue him in that West Seattle doesn't LIKE being owned by cars?

@garyn...We have the best bagels? Where?

No to Top Pot! Donuts are overrated and the fad will pass just like the cupcake fad.

  31. 2 votes in our household for a top pot. s-bix doesn't have a good enough selection of top pot doughnuts. my other half has always thought that the cleaners at the southwest corner of Admiral and California would make a great top pot. but that would be hard I guess- all the cleanup.

I don't see donuts as a fad--they've been around a long time, and a million cops can't be wrong. I'd love to see us get a Top Pot--cool atmosphere plus killer donuts. I found the Original Bakery donuts to be "meh." And I liked the surly teenager at the counter even less. (We're gonna need a "surly teenaged help" thread!) Mighty-O is awesome, but yes a bit different and I kind of like that it takes a special trip to get to them. (I'm a bit of a donut fan, if you haven't picked up on that...) When/if we do get the donut shop, I'll help organize the walking tour of the bakeries, ending at the "big pants shop." (Right on cjboffoli! LOL.)

Hi, I'm James and I'm a Top Pot addict.

Say no to Top Pot West Seattle!

I Love me some Top Pot and am glad that all of the other locations are not super close. If there was a Top Pot in West Seattle I would be there every day and be giant and fat.

Keep Top Pot away from James! Keep James out of Fat Pants!!!

johnyblegs, I think they may have been referring to the bagels at Zat's.

I swear, there was a Dunkin Donuts in Burien. It is now the drive-thru Starbucks. ?

  37. i believe the nearest dunkin donunts are in Portland..

    Posted 2 years ago #
  38. I am not generally a fan of donuts (aside from the Bacon Maple bar, of course), but this discussion had me thinking. So this morning I went to Red Cup for a delicious latte and I tried a Mighty-O donut...gets a solid "meh" from me.

    Posted 2 years ago #
  39. Mighty-O doughnut is a bland version of a doughnut for people who are afraid to stray too far from their healthy diet. (IMO) like eating a tofu steak.

    Posted 2 years ago #
  40. ROFL!! So it's healthy? I don't have to feel bad about my foray into donut-land?

    Posted 2 years ago #
  41. ok no, not really healthy, but certainly not yummy and greasy like a raspberry glazed cruller from TP

    Posted 2 years ago #
  42. hahah. yeah, I looked up the nutritional content - they're "healthy" in that they are organic - but it's still a donut after all. Slightly fewer calories than a comparable Top Pot.

Mighty-O donuts are nasty! Aren't they vegan? That is probably why they taste like cardboard. And trust me, I've done numerous searches on the DD website to try and find the closest location (I admit I have an obsession!). All of the local ones closed years ago (forced out by SBUX- remember there used to be one on 2nd or 3rd downtown?). There isn't one in PDX- I believe my donut sensing nose would have found it by now! :)

All this donut talk reminds me- one of my coworkers will be in Manhattan and Philly next week, so I need to convince her to smuggle back some DD donuts for me. Woo hoo!!

  44. Born and raised in Boston and on Dunkin' Donuts, all I can say is NASTY. Fake ingredients and fillings taste like chemicals, same as everything Krispy Kreme carries (except the glazed fresh out of the fryer). Top Pot does a decent Apple Fritter and Old Fashioned but I find their donuts much too bready, like dense cake. I tried Mighty-O and found them to be overhyped too. The only redeeming factor for The Daily Dozen Donuts is they're small and HOT! Top Pot needs to do better if they want to expand here. And yes, Starbucks carries a few of the Top Pots Donuts.

If we could get Donut Star to branch out from Auburn then THAT would cause for great celebration. Top Pot is just OK, I don't get the frenzy they create.
    -
They are on Auburn Way, they sell out VERY quickly, and then they close, so get there early.
Incredibly light raised donuts with an almost imperceptibly crispy exterior. The apple fritter is like eating sweet, apple flavored air; light, no grease, best I've ever had.

Worked at Tangletown next to Mighty-o for a number of years. They ARE vegan, so they are also missing important ingredients that make a donut worth eating, and they go stale almost immediately. If you can get a VERY fresh French Toast donut from them it's pretty edible, but after an hour or so they are just dry and stale.
Some things are simply meant to NOT be good for you in quantity; a decent donut is one of those things.
