A very large, wooly grayish-brown dog with a red collar is wandering in the 44th/Dawson Street neighborhood. (He looks sort of like a huge poodle). He accepted a dog treat from my neighbor -who knows all the dogs around here and doesn't recognize him- so she could get a look at his ID, but he ran away. Last seen about 9:50 heading south on 44th. He seems very sweet, but shy. I'll post again if we see him.

Happy ending: Oscar the labradoodle is waiting at the vet for his humans. He had a chip, so my neighbor's vet could send him to his vet to wait. I'm wondering: should dogs have phone numbers on their tags for direct contact with owners? Some people might not know to check for a chip. I wouldn't have.

My dogs have id tags with phone numbers as well as chips.
We first tried the tags that dangle, but the lettering wore off quickly. Now we use the type that slips on the collar band.
If you don't want your phone number available to passersby more than you want an escape artist dog back, think carefully before you do the same. :)

I used a dremel tool to engrave Leo's name and my phone number into the back of his license tag, so he only has the one tag - no wearing off of engravings and no multiple jangley tags that drive me nuts. It has gotten him home to me once already, when he took himself to the dog park while I was at work. :/ However, the time before that he spent the night in doggy jail because his license tag fell off just prior to him leaving... Now that he's all grown up he doesn't run off in search of me when I go to work anymore (and he also doesn't feel the need to clear 6' fences just to see what's on the other side).
I do not have him wearing his rabies tag, as proof of that can be looked up once I'm contacted.
