Big Fence up at Colman Pool.

  1. It's been a few days since I have to Colman Pool. I walk that way regularly, but hadn't been by since the last big windstorm. (A few big old Madrona's came down up on the bluff.)

Anyway, I was sort of shocked to see a big, expansive construction fence up tonight. They not only fenced off the kiddie play area, but also back behind the pool and then around on the north end as well.

Not having seen anything in the local press, WSB, or even in recent emails from the Morgan Community Association or Friends of Lincoln Park, I was taken aback. Was it a toxic spill? What were they doing? I puzzled on it all the way home and then checked the blog's archive to see if I had missed anything. Next I looked at the SP & R website, pools and found this: http://www.seattle.gov/parks/aquatics/colman.htm

--a note saying closed for Renovation until late June 2012. So I am posting this because I know others will be wondering. Maybe good ol' WSB could do a story with photos when they get a chance? ;)

I just wish they had not taken up every inch of lawn on the south. They went right to the sidewalk. It seems a little agressive and unfriendly. Maybe the contractor didn't have a clue about the park users and patrons. That's a special spot to many of us. I do appreciate the upgrade, but a little more notice and less harshing would have been good. ~z

  2. There was a Phase One done back in the spring of 2011, and they had told people about the second phase, but I think we all just forgot about it. I'll make sure to mention it in the next MoCA bulletin. It sounds like major work, that's probably why the fence hogs up all the working space available.

  3. I'm actually following up on this tomorrow for a story, as someone else e-mailed us over the weekend. I thought we'd published an update in recent months but can't find it in the archives! Here's what the Colman Pool home page says:
    >>>Colman will open late in 2012 due to a major construction project that has some summer work required to complete. The capital project will begin in winter and run until June 29.

This capital project is a major investment in the future of Colman Pool… after 70 years the deck will be replaced and the entire gutter system redesigned. In addition, an underwater leak will be repaired and new plaster liner installed.

The pool will open to the public on Saturday, June 30 which is 5 weeks later than usual. The pool traditionally opens on Memorial Day weekend.>>>
