There's a new baby in my family and I'd like to get a gift that's unique and from a local store. Any suggestions?

  2. Small Clothes, Admiral area, eastside of California near Hinds; very high quality recycled and some new, newborn and up to mid-kid years; awesome store run by local woman artist and her mom

  3. also a tip for newborn gifts; I've been working with families with newborns, infants, toddlers for 20+ yrs; parents receive a TON of newborn clothes/toys, which babies outgrow in physical size and development so quickly; then when the baby is a year/18 mos, they have no more clothes; if you want to be unique, give an outfit/gift that can be used later, even longer, and all the world will see as they take baby out and about much more at 1 yr and beyond; or if you have the means, give a mix of newborn and 1yr/18 mos gift

Small Clothes is an excellent place to visit. I've both sold and purchased from them, and make it a point to stop in whenever possible, since their inventory is ever-changing. My other two favorite local baby/kid shops are Georgia Blu and Curious Kids Stuff (both in the Junction) with GB for clothing and CKS for toys.

Congratulations on the newest addition to your family!

MOXI on California Ave just South of Charelstown has some cute unique items. It's a paper/gift store. I got a cute "Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner" onesie there. I think the Mail Stop place on Admiral & 47th(?) has ALKI kid shirts as well as a few other kids things.

Oh and just an FYI.... Georgia Blu has some amazing unique stuff...... however, I have a problem paying more than 20 bucks (and that's far from the lowest price there) for a kids shirt that will only be worn a few times. But they do have some super cute things!

I've seen Georgia Blue and thought I'd stop in there. I'm thinking of an organic cotton blanket that I could have embroidered with the baby's initials. Seems like it will get good use and it could be a keepsake (I still have mine). It would be great if was locally made.

  8. It's not West Seattle, but I usually get baby gifts at the Pike Pl. Market, clothes or toys.

  9. Cupcake Royal has really cute baby t-shirts. You could pair it with a dozen cupcakes and coffee tumblers for the parents too. Goodness knows they'll need the energy!

  10. Try gagagifts.com - owned by a West Seattleite. Great, unique custom items and beautifully packaged!

I'm a new mom- and totally agree with Diane about the clothes! And the mom has likely already received a bunch of baby blankets- I lost track of many I got as gifts, but it's upwards of ten and I don't use any of them.

If you are sure she would fill out a baby book through the years, I'd suggest getting a really nice one. Not sure where you can pick those up though.

A baby book is a nice suggestion. Northwest Art and Frame probably has some.

Well, there's always the Liquor Store. Give them a big bottle of scotch.

Hey. You asked for unique. I'll bet no one else gives that to them!

Alternately, there's also that furniture store by Jaks. I bet they'd never expect an end table as a baby gift.

  14. What ever you decide on, also get them a Seattle P-I / Times from the day the baby was born. Seal them in one of those huge Ziploc bags.

They may be a real novelty at graduation.

  15. Your favorite children's books are nice gifts. Or if you want to do something for the family, then Dream Dinners (freezer full of meals) or something like that is a great gift too!

  16. just stopped into Small Clothes at Hinds/California to touch base

this is the best shop in West Seattle for quality re-used baby/kid’s stuff

and surprise; sign on their door, they are moving April 1 to new street-level digs across the street; fantastic!!!

  17. I agree with all PP - all great stores. Books are a great idea.

Something totally West Seattle - an Avalon Glass Works piece for mama. Flowers in a vase to keep forever. I love those things around my house that remind me of that crazy time, the boys and I am sure once they are gone it will be nice to still have.

Another nice gift is a gift card (with babysitting included) for a day spa or a picture place for first photos.

All gifts that I liked to get and give.

Diane, you don't know how happy this makes me (and how UNhappy it makes my bank account. *grin*) I've had to bypass Small Clothes on a handful of occasions, because I was out for a walk and had the big ol' sit-n-stand stroller with me, and couldn't haul it+munchkins up all those stairs. Looking forward to visiting them in their new location!

  19. "gift card (with babysitting included)"; excellent idea; and I do babysitting, specialize in infants

  20. A really nice gift would be a gift certificate for a high quality/artistic baby portrait or family portrait after the baby is born. I have a few friends who received a gift like this at their showers and the results were so wonderful. I don't have any recommendations of a W. Sea photographer but I am sure some of the local area children's boutiques would have a recommendation.

  21. yes carrieann; a HUGE bonus with new store, easy stroller access; I can just see all the strollers parked out front, which people can see driving by; and they will have better parking; the current store has fire hydrant out front; new store also has parking behind building; I can hardly wait, especially since they are just few blocks from my home

I went to Georgia Blu today and found the greatest gifts! Exactly what I was looking for - high quality and unique. I did not think they were expensive. "T" was an amazing help, she gave me great ideas and I am thrilled with my purchase. I was also able to support a local business instead of ordering something online. Thank you T and Georgia Blu! I'll be back for future gifts.

  23. please tell, after all the great suggestions here; what did you decide to buy?

Georgia Blu! is a gorgeous store, with beautiful clothes, very unique items; I love to go window shopping there; "expensive" is relative; too pricey for many, clearly fills a niche market

looks to me like all the suggestions on this thread were for local businesses; lots of great ideas; good to see support for locals
