We need a new home for our mixed breed dog. She still has puppy energy but calms indoors. Needs person who loves and has time for this wonderful pet. She is not spayed, has had her first set of shots. Affectionate, loves to cuddle, should be only dog in home, good w/children. 40lbs,black w/brindle markings. Not sure what breed, has some Shepherd, very nice looking.

  2. Where did you get her from? If your dog is only a year old, then you should be able to go back to the breeder or shelter for assistance.

You keep describing her as a "Shepherd" mix, which is probably deterring people from responding to your post. Most people see "Shepherd" and think German Shepherd, which can sound intimidating. In a previous post, you said Belgian Shepherd, which is probably more accurately described as a Belgian Sheepdog, which is a more family-friendly breed.

Also, there are a number of good dog trainers in West Seattle who could help you learn how to manage the dog more effectively, rather than give her away.

However, I really do encourage you to go back to whoever you got her from and talk to them about your situation. The breeder or shelter would much rather help get her into a good home than see her be dumped as a stray... especially considering that she has not been spayed.

  3. What Hopey said AND please god just don't give her away UNALTERED. I will be happy to pay for the spay now and that way you can find a home responsibly. plus how old is this dog.

    Hopefully you will respond.

feraltrapping@gmail.com if you really want to be responsible about finding this dog a GOOD home.

  4. It's lovely to see how concerned people are about the fate of this dog. I have an appointment with Noreen tomorrow to meet her dog. I've owned dogs my entire life, including large breeds. My sister in law is a veterinarian, so I have no problem with getting the dog spayed myself. I recently lost my sweet dog, so I'm very hopeful that Noreen's dog and I will hit it off...I'm eager to have a canine friend again.
Also, there is such a dog as a Belgian Shepherd...most people know them by their more formal name, the Malinois.

As I said, it's lovely to see the concern, but the tone of a lot of these posts comes off a bit judgey. Can't we trust that Noreen is an adult with the ability to make sensible, loving decisions for her pet? I've actually spoken to her, and if you could hear the affection and concern in her voice when she talks about her pet, it would make it very plain to you that she has her dog's best interests in mind.

  5. Bottom line-dog needs to be spayed no matter where she ends up. Thank you Hammerhead for offering. Halyn, Hopefully your offer to spay the dog will stand whether or not you and she hit it off.

  6. First of all, Halyn, I'm glad to hear you are considering adopting the dog. I have lived with a Belgian Sheepdog and they are lovely, sweet dogs. I genuinely hope you hit it off with her.

There are many of us on the Forum who have a sincere concern for animals, especially family pets like dogs and cats. After posting four times in less than two days, the OP was starting to look rather desperate to just get rid of this dog, which raised my concern.

Hammerhead is dedicated to trapping feral cats to ensure they are spayed/neutered to break the feral cycle. I am a small, home-based dog breeder who ensures all of my puppies are spayed/neutered before they are six months old. As a breeder, I know it can be difficult and even embarrassing for a family to come back and say they can't keep their dog, but it's part of the job of a good breeder to accept that and offer to help. Since the OP sounded desperate, I wanted to make sure she knew there were resources available.

I tried to be as neutral in my tone as I could. Please don't assume someone is being judgmental when information and alternatives are offered.

I've met this dog. She is very sweet and medium-sized rather than large. She would be a wonderful companion in a single-pet home.

  8. Rockhills it does not sound like this dog is going to be a good fit. So there is no tone here. It is matter of fact about us TRUE rescue people and how passionate we are about animals being fixed, feral cats or dogs. I want everything fixed.

I just hope this person will get a hold of me to get the dog spayed or if she ends up taking it to the shelter where it will either be killed or put up for adoption. Then that is what will need to happen. Sorry to be blunt but that is the truth.

It does sound like this person is quite desperate as per other posts about getting rid of stuff.

So please do not accuse us of a "tone", the statements made are legit questions and concerns for any animal just being given away.

  9. Well, Abigail the shepherd/pit bull/dingo mix is enjoying a pig's ear after an exhilarating ride to Petco. That is an animal who loves car rides! As I type, she is raising her head from time to time and looking over at me. I give her a "good girl!" and she thumps her tail and goes back to her treat. She is already following my daughter around as though she was her own pup. She took one look at my husband and fell completely in love. She seems to like me ok, as I am the source of pig ears, but clearly Husband and Mini-Halyn are her main buds. The cat is not speaking to us at present, but will surely come down from the top of the wardrobe and make friends soon--he is always a bit standoffish when a new pet comes in to the home.
I've got to go...gotta make some calls, get a spay scheduled, get tags taken care of...start making friends with and enjoying my new pet.

Oh, and Hammerhead? I've had rescue dogs my whole life. I've fostered sick animals. I've spent thousands of dollars taking care of other people's pets, and I resent your implication that only you are a TRUE pet rescuer...I'm curious how you measure pet-rescue worthiness. I've got to say, if making snippy, judgmental comments about other people's rescue cred is what makes someone worthy in your eyes, I'll enjoy my stay in your bad graces, 'cause I just don't see eye to eye with you on that.

  11. Halyn- Glad to hear that the dog has found a new home. I hope you do a bit of research on how to introduce the new dog to your resident cat. And, don't forget to schedule that spay.

Congrats on your new fur baby Halyn! I hope you get dog/cat peace in your house soon. It's really the cat attacking the dog that I've found to be a bigger problem than the dog hurting the cat. :-)

  15. Halyn,
Many thanks for not only taking in your new girl, but also for having your entire family involved in this new adventure and them being part of pup's welcome into new home from the start. Lucky girl sounds like she's home forever. I hope her former family is at peace knowing she's home now. Enjoy!

I'm so glad to hear that she has found a good home! As I said, she is a very sweet dog and will be a wonderful addition to the right family. I'm a little confused, though... HH, were you responding to my post or to someone else's post?

Hi, Halyn. Glad she's found a good home! I agree, sometimes replies to posts require a thicker skin, but well-meaning souls here talked me out of surrendering a hyper puppy and they are right: he's made good progress and becoming a great, loyal dog. Congratulations!

  20. kudos to all of those people who quietly welcome strays and rescues into their homes and manage to make loving family members of them without needing to be told how.

I think the multiple posts about the dog, as well as household items(!), definitely started to have an uncomfortable frenetic tone to them. Really I think everyone here just wanted her to be safe and I'll admit that I was starting to worry what would happen if time ran out. I'm so glad she found a place to land - and good for you and your pup too, ws4ever!

  23. there are an amazing number of people in West Seattle who choose to welcome rescue animals into their homes. Being out and about with pups i identify as rescues, i tend to hear their stories.

It makes me smile that so many "problem" animals find loving forever homes

that's all. no hidden agenda... just kudos to those who open their homes and their hearts
