Barber shop with shave?

  1. Is there anyplace local (besides Weldon's and Valentines) that a man can get an honest haircut with an old-fashioned face shave? The hot towels, the straight-edge razor, brush, etc.

  2. If somebody else doesn't weigh in quickly ... I don't know if he does or doesn't, but you have to call Rick's Barber Shop on California south of The Junction just to ask:
    206-933-8733

    because he's good people.

    Good luck!

  3. Shaving is actually illegal in Barber shops Seattle. Part of the AIDS scare about 15 years ago.

  4. Have tried in the past -he doesn't. Thx though. Whaaa? Illegal? How do "upscale" men's salons like Weldon's, Capellis or Valentines get away with it and charge -like $75 or something outrageous??

  5. Until someone post the RCW or the SMP I am going to assume that shaving customers is not illegal, but in the 80's every barber I dealt with pretty much stopped doing them. Some alluded to some licensing authority or other in but none told the same story. Some admitted that they were afraid of aids and dealing with blood from shaving cuts and the paranoia of their other customers who thought another customer "looked gay".

A search for the word "shave" turns up nothing in the Seattle municipal code search page but perhaps a less cursory search could find something.

hmm for $75.00 a pop, I'll get a straight razor and come over to your house and heat up the towels in your microwave :)

Ken, you don't still have that nervous twitch, do ya? ;-)

I have to agree with TR, Rick's a pretty good guy, and barber. Of course, I might be a bit biased. He's been my barber and a good buddy for over 20 years now!

Have you tried the barber shop behind the chelan cafe under the bridge? He seems like an old fashioned barber shop from the outside so maybe he does them.

  8. I'll beat Ken by half! Sorry, Ken, times are tough and I'm heavily invested in tech stocks ...
    .
Seriously, it would be nice to to have a warm shave. Oslo's on Queen Anne (guy by the name of Chad) offers this for $35. Even has a Father/Son special for $50. Not as fair of a price as having the barber do it, as I recall happening in years past.

  9. can't help with the haircut part, but you can get the fab shave experience in Bellevue Square at 'The Art of Shaving' store. Usually you have to make an appointment.

Are there any barber shops in West Seattle (or Seattle) that offer straight razor shaves? The shop, Oslo's in Queen Anne went out of business last year.

  15. They now have an "Art of Shaving" store in Southcenter Mall a.k.a Westfield SHopping Center. I love it!

Just do it yourself and spend the money on two shaves for a straight razor and badger brush kit. It makes my morning shave a fabulous experience! :-)

I've had it done at the Art of Shaving in Bellevue Square a few times, and I would not want to try it on myself (I'm 2 months of growth now).

  17. Prim Barber on 136th and Ambaum in Burien does the razor. It won't cost $75, either. More like $15.

  18. In the "West Seattle Community Shopper" coupon magazine that just arrived in the mail, there's an ad for Salon Julian on 35th with a $10 off a hot towel straight razor shave offer...

Can anyone verify how razors are cleaned/sanitized? I am interested in a straight razor shave but am worried about MRSA, AIDS, and other deseases like hepatitis.
    .
Since salons are regulated by the state, it seems like there must be some sort of requirement for sanitation but I can't find anything on line.
    .
    Thanks.

I know a lot of the straight razors used in many places are the one use type....nice handle with a swing out holder where a razor slides in. Once it's used, it's tossed.

I can't imagine why just keeping a permanent razor in an alcohol filled glass wouldn't do the trick. A good wipe followed by a soak for a while seems like it would kill just about anything.

I realize how incredibly scientific that must sound...
