I am super excited about all new food in West Seattle-pretty sure I did my part in making Zippys famous! So it was with great delight that today I got a chance-cause I had cash- to pull in to try a bite of the new truck Athenas. I got the lamb gyro. First let me say it was fresh, served nicely, a good price and quick-about 10 minutes or less. I am sure I will have it again in a pinch BUT authentic greek it was not. It had caramelized onions-which I LOVE-but have never had in gyro and they over powered the flavor of the lamb. The sauce had NO garlic and I was left with the bread and onion taste not the feta cheese, garlic and yogurt taste I usually expect from a gyro. I prefer sliced meat but this was chunks which made it pretty chunky to chew. And honestly the meat on it's own had little to no flavor.
My rule is to always give a place 3 tries-and then I break that sometimes too-I keep going to Endolyne Joes cause the drinks are so darn good-but the food is always so-so for me-anyway-I am looking forward to dining in and seeing the full menu. I do wish them luck and will be there again as soon as they move in.

I went on Friday and had the chicken gyro and LOVED it, I really liked the addition of the carmelized onions. YUM. Thank you for opening up in Highland Park Athenas!

I went last Friday and thought it was very good. I can't really speak to authenticity, though I love Greek food--I've been to Greece and had things there that probably wouldn't be considered authentic! But I thought the lamb gyro was pretty tasty.

I was really excited about this place, but the food on first try was a serious disapointment.
They don't cook the gyros meat off the skewer, it is precooked in a different fashion and lacked the texture and the delicate flavor compared to both what I would expect at a typical american gyro spot or what you would expect to find in Greece. My brother said the taste of the meat reminded him of liver, which is not appeitizing to me at all.
The falafel is done in a greek fashion with tzakiki sauce instead of tahini which was a turn off for us also.
Lastly, I like caramelized onions but they put them on everything which again I don't think works so well. And I like onions. I can imagine most women or non-onion eaters would not welcome that.

re : the falafel in a greek fashion...it is, after all, a greek restaurant...not middle eastern...
why most women? I love onions, I love caramalized onions...
guess I'm gonna have to go eat at this place to see what they're about...

I went here with my husband yesterday. They seem to have toned down the onions, and upped the other veggies, both changes of which I approve. The husband got the cheesesteak and liked it except they put feta on it instead of provolone (which is just weird, and despite having assured him otherwise--Morningstar Deli at 9th and Henderson also has cheesesteaks and theirs are better).
Mind you, I had just bicycled about 20 miles so it's possible ANYTHING would have tasted good right then.

curtissimo.. you did notice that they are cooking out of a very small truck right now didn't you?
please give them a little time and access to a full kitchen before deciding they aren't worthwhile..
the gyro i had was very good fast food..
if what they can sell out of a truck is that good..
i am eager to find out what they will do with a storefront.soon. very soon :)

I am all in support and I hope it gets better but those gyros were not so good... I will just leave it at that. You should be able to put up a meat spit in a truck... every gyros place at every fair in town does that. I have eaten phenomenal food out of a truck before. Anyway don't want too be negative but I do hope they get a new recipe for the gyros as they go forward.

This woman loves onions too...? The day I went, they were out of lamb gyros. I had the greek salad instead and it was very good.

Took some friends here today and we all really enjoyed it. They were definitely heavy on the onions today though.
