   We may be in the market for a new roof soon. The current house has cedar shake, and we are not replacing it with cedar.

   We are looking at roofing options and saw the new style interlocking metal roof at the Green Festival. I love that you can get a roof that looks like cedar, or tile or slate but it's metal.

   I'm just wondering if anyone has a roof like this and what do you think of it. How is the noise level, that is one of my biggest concerns. Part of our second floor does have attic space over it but part of it, does not which I've read of course that does change the noise level with the level of insulation.

   nighthawk -- I don't have a metal roof, but do have a solid surface "membrane" roof that is a LOT louder than we thought it would be when we put it on 3 years ago... we don't have an attic though (went with the highest vaulted ceilings we could) so that for sure contributes to the noise issue. We wanted to put on a metal roof, but it was 3 x the cost of the membrane roof. I think Vashon Metal Roofing was who we wanted to use.

   I've pretty much gotten used to the sound and it sort of reminds me of camping in a trailer when I was little and the sound of the rain putting me to sleep.

   Maybe if you find someone that has one, they could let you do a trial sleepover one rainy night and you could check it out -- kidding of course!!!

   I had a metal roof installed a few years ago. Like you, the house had a shake roof. I wanted something with a 50 year life, so I went metal. It was very expensive, but I felt worth it. There is a noticible rainfall noise particularly when its a hard rain, but you do get used to it pretty quickly. The first year, just about anytime it would rain, I would notice it, but now, I rarely notice the sound.
   My advice -- if you are doing it for the warranty -- make sure you use as the contractor someone who will be around when you might need to invoke the warranty. After investigation, I chose Jorve. They are more expensive than others that I got quotes, but they have been around for several decades. They also did a fantastic clean up job, including fixing everything that they damaged even in the slightest way (they dropped a shingle onto my trex deck, which resulted in a dent - they replaced the plank).
   I like the look of the house, and its tought to know that its metal.

   I recently replaced a metal roof with a new one. The original lasted 49 years! The replacement was resonable in terms of cost and it will certainly out live me. What could be better than hard rain on a roof that drowns out traffic, aircraft, and city racket? I'm surprised they are not more popular. Highly recommended!
