Call Camilles on California. They do not do alterations there but have a great local seamstress who does wonderful work and I am very very picky about my hems.

On California, one block north of Cafe Ladro, there is a woman who does alterations. She took in winter coats when I lost a bunch of weight! And, it seems there is always some one in there having her do their jeans. She\'s very good too.

Thanks Bernicki! I apologize to Mrs. Kim - I could NOT remember her name as I was writing.

I always thought she had a fast turn around as well, considering the volume of work she seems to have.

  6. Mrs. Kim is great - fast, good quality, and very reasonable. She can sometimes do same day!

John and Andy were pretty good Taylors and I think Duran Duran is still playing together.

Rip Taylor was also pretty good and although I wasn\'t alive, I think Zachary was ok as well.

Oh, you\'re looking for a tailor.....I got it.

Hahahahaha. House that is so funny. I was just having a conversation like a week ago that there were 3 Taylor\'s in the original Duran Duran. (John, Roger and Andy).

    I guess I meant tailor huh. 8-)

  10. There\'s a gal down at the cleaners on Alki -- VERY good and always well priced IMO. She moved from her original location that was across 42nd from Met Market when they tore down to build the Bartell\'s complex.

Another thing I had done at Fits All recently: chair cushion covers. My parents gave me a huge wicker rocker with two big cushions on it, in a fabric I didn\'t want. I picked out new fabric, cording, and zippers, and took that and the cushions to Mrs. Kim. She contracted with a friend to copy the cushion covers in the new fabric. They are perfect, they were done quickly, and they were very reasonably priced.

I need to have a dress altered for a wedding this summer. All of the above good recommendations for that as well, or were they more geared toward the pants hemming?

    Thanks!

  13. I\'m sure Mrs. Kim could help you with that! (Fits All on California a block north of Cafe Ladro).

I bought two pairs of jeans from Costco for $12.99 ea, but the hem job on those pants cost me $10.00 ea at the alterations next to Yummie\'s crappy Teriyaki. Ridiculous....:(

Mrs. Kim has done the above-mentioned heavy winter coats to her impeccable standards for me, but she has also added front and back darts to blouses of mine, taken in dresses, etc....the woman is a talent. No worries.

I bought an evening dress online that was slightly too big, and Mrs. Kim altered it to look like it was made for me. (Sorry to keep chiming in, but Mrs. Kim is so fab.)

I\'ve always been satisfied with the alterations (primarily trouser hemming) at the cleaners near Yummy Teriyaki and feel that $10 is reasonable.
Can anyone advise what other tailors are charging to hem a pair of trousers/jeans?

I guess if I were having an evening gown altered I would probably try Mrs. Kim based on the other recommendations. She sounds wonderful.

  19. Elgrego, you might try using Unique Stitch fabric glue, then you won\'t have to sew. It\'s amazing stuff. Available at fabric/craft stores.

  20. Jerald, is that Unique Stitch fabric glue something that will allow you to remove the item, or is it permanent? My husband needs annual patches on his hockey referee jersey and I\'m kinda sick of sewing them on for him (or watching him take 5x as long to do it :) - it would be easier to glue them on, but they do need to come off each year and replaced.

Hey Sue, if the glue is permanent, how \'bout Velcro? You could even glue (instead of sewing) the Velcro halves to jersey and patch...next year, put new piece of Velcro on new patch and voila.

Thank you so much for the suggestions.

I ended up going to Ms. Kim, and she was amazing.

She did beautiful work, I got them back quickly and she only charged $8 per pair of pants. (compared to $29 a pair that I used to pay in Redmond).

I would suggest anyone who needs any type of garment work to go to Fits All / Ms. Kim.

    Thank you!

$29 a pair!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me????? !!!!!!!!

Yikes that\'s robbery! So glad you were happy with Mrs. Kim though!

I\'m just hoping I don\'t have to go back to her to have all of my clothes let back OUT! Have you noticed how people around here talk about food and restaurants all of the time? Yikes.

Hahahaha. I know the $29 was insane. I think b/c it was Redmond, people would pay it.

But yeah the food talk is like an epidemic around here. All the food, all the time! I try so hard to be good!

  27. I\'m actually having a hard time wrapping my brain around the concept of hemming a pair of jeans. If they\'re too long, I just cuff them up. I\'m tall though, so if I have to cuff them it\'s not much - I guess if one was shorter and the jeans weren\'t petite, it could be an issue.

As for hemming general, I had a skirt once that I \"hemmed\" with a stapler - LOL! It was an emergency repair that I intended to sew when I got home from work and never got around to it. That staple held up for 2 years of washing weekly. Cheapest alteration I ever had. :)

  28. Sue-- The Unique Stitch glue is permanent, basically, but you could probably pull off a patch and replace it with another. You couldn\'t remove one and expect the fabric to look good again uncovered. I used it for my kids\' Camp Fire uniform emblems. Sometimes I\'d glue them on and then sew a stitch or two on the corners that might come loose.

I was at Pacific Fabrics the other day and heard a clerk telling someone that she\'d made a tote bag using only Unique Stitch and no sewing -- and it held together! That\'s what reminded me of it.

Hopefully this question isn\'t too stupid :) I have never actually had a dress altered before (other than my wedding dress)! Do I need to make an appointment or just drop by?

    Hey erincorrine -

There is no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to matters of alterations to clothing. Important stuff!! This is environmental couture!! Reducing (if we are lucky)and reusing, right? ;)

Actually, if you stop in, she might be tied up sometimes, but she sets informal appointments if she is. If you are close by, just drop in and see if she can work with you. If not, she\'ll tell you when another time is better. I don\'t have her phone number. Enjoy!

  31. Mrs. Kim on California is very reasonable and qualified \"tailor\". Her shop is located next door to Tom Yum Koong Thai restaurant.
