   I am looking for a huge tire to put in our daycare play area - the kind you immerse into the ground and the kids can climb on and around. I am clueless about where to look for one. Thanks !

   I'd try one of the local tire centers to see if they have them, or could order one for you. You're probabably looking for a tractor or truck tire. Courtesy Tire is in the Junction, and Les Schwab isn't too far outside WS. Don't know of any others. I haven't used either of them, so don't know anything about their service/prices.

   you might ask some of the veggie vendors at the farmer's market... old tractor tires stashed behind the barn are common on farms.. and not so easily recycled at home on an organic farm

   per the King County Health Dept. website, Phelps Tire Company (2520 Airport Way South, Seattle, WA 98134-2022, 206-622-8977 (call first)) is the nearest 'private tire recycler' and they accept truck tires.

   Despite the fact that most of us folks who grew up in the 50's and 60's played on tires, there are some concerns about the toxicity of materials used in tires; you may want to ask Phelps (or whomever) about if it is practical to seal the tire with paint, etc. I searched for 'tires toxic children' and came up with several sites that described concerns about shredded tires used for playgrounds, although the material is 'federally approved'. One site that sells tire swings (http://pppresentations.com/) indicated they pressure wash each tire and use a 'non-toxic coating' inside and out. They may be willing to tell you what they use to seal/paint the tire.
