AHHH! WS overtaken by mostly mindless zombies!

I was driving home from work this afternoon to see a shocking sight upon entering WS from the bridge. "Walking on Logs" and most of 35th have been attacked by monsters with Dino Rossi and NO on 1098 signs!

I do not personally have any signs to counter these. Anyone out there that can put up some Murray and YES 1098 signs? Maybe a McDermott or two?

PLEASE! BEFORE PEOPLE THINK WS HAS TURNED INTO SUBURBAN BELLEVUE!

  2. The wingnut van and Rossi sign waver was at 35th and Fauntleroy this morning. I subscribe to the lone wingnut theory.

BTW Does any one ever go to that teriyaki place on the corner? I never will. That van does not park there without the permission of the owner.

  3. it seems that the same people putting up Rossi and no on 1098 signs are also putting up Heavy signs...
noticed them all happily co-existing on Admiral this afternoon.

@Ken - I have lived by the teriyaki place for 6 years and only gone in once. It was hands down the WORST teriyaki I have ever had; however, I have seen lots of people going in and out each night so maybe my standards are too high??

  6. I was under the impression that signs like that on public property were illegal, that they needed permission to put them up. Am I wrong? Or should we just expect that from the Rossi people? What an eyesore...and how many will remain for weeks after the election? It's littering as far as I'm concerned.

Mindless zombies by voting no to 1098? LOL, I don't think so.....

The constitution is absolutely clear: after just two years, the Legislature can change anything about I-1098 with just a simple majority vote. Remember, every single "dedicated" funding initiative that has passed in the last 20 years has been altered in some way by Olympia. I highly doubt that I-1098 will be the first initiative to break that streak.

Proponents of the income tax say the money will be used for education and health programs, but Olympia consistently diverts funds from "dedicated accounts." In fact, 74 of these accounts – including those for education and health – have been raided in the last 10 years. They can use 1098 funds however the h*@l they want.

I am a hard working individual barely making it, as are most people I know. Olympia needs to be held responsible, so I am voting NO to 1098

  8. operative word is "can"...not "will". Who knows what will happen in 2 years...geez.

JanS: Of course we don't know the future, lol. Judging from your MYRIAD of posts on the blog, you are clearly not one who sits back watches the clouds drift by. Nor am I. I'm making an educated guess based on history and the fact that this will be detrimental to WA business/citizens.

Voted yes-i make WELL under 200K. I have to believe it won't change in two years, IF they want to be re-elected. Even if it is reduced to 100K, I still won't be efected. Our tax system is regressive. It costs the same for a family of 4 to eat no matter how much $$ they make. Of course some people eat more filet mignon and king crab than others. Love the Gates family!

  11. While I am all for goring someone else's ox with 1098, I do worry that by voting no I'd be getting in bed with Arthur Laffer, Ronald Reagan's enabler/apologist for cutting federal taxes. Washington State is the most regressive tax state and letting families who are earning 20x the poverty level skate while sticking it to the poor seems cold hearted.

Rodsreels5 is right to complain about taxation if his complaint is about the current system -- 1098 should only redress the excessive taxes he feels he pays since he is "barely making it" by his own admission and will pay no more in tax for 2 years at least. And yes, I do think they will amend 1098.
    -
$400K married/$200K single ceiling at the start; using common sense, this is likely to be lowered if amended after two years. If so, it will be a gentle creep. If one is barely making it they will come for you last.

I am still divided and have yet to vote on 1098.

Interesting how many people complain about the taxation system in this state taking all their money but refuse to take a risk at changing it, thereby leaving the same system in place. If you are in a lower income category, pretty much all your income goes to necessities. The current WA tax system takes a much higher percentage of your spendable income than it does for someone in a higher income bracket. By voting against this, you are basically saying that you want to pay higher taxes.
Interesting how the opponents focus on the income tax part and don't mention the reduction in property tax levies and some B&O taxes. Seems like 1098 is an honest effort to START reforming our system. Yes, the legislature COULD lower the taxable income levels in 2 years. Or, they COULD take further steps to make our tax system more equitable. Or, they COULD continue to do nothing and people like RR5 could continue to pay more than their fair share. If nothing else, if you aren't in the taxable group, you will at least get 2 years of lower prop taxes (if you own property) and reduced taxes if you own a business.
Is it a perfect solution? No, nothing is, if for no other reason than stuff happens and the world changes. It's a start ... and if it is approved, it will end up in court as some folks say that applying a tax to only a few people is a violation of the state constitution.
It will be interesting to parse the election results to see how many who voted no on 1098 also voted yes on 1100 and/or 1105 and 1107 and possibly 1058 and 1082.

  13. property tax relief translates into consumer spending which generates jobs

passing tax savings along to small businesses generate jobs...

jobs add sales tax income to state coffers..

sounds like a much better bet than waiting for those tax breaks for the wealthy to trickle down...

just when is that supposed to happen ?

    ;-(

    rodsreels5...

    so what's more fair?
each of us pays roughly the same percentage of our income
or each of us pays roughly the same tax dollars on essential items?

you are so worried about what the legislature might do that you have overlooked what has already happened.

  14. Why yes in two years the repuglicans will be arguing that the income tax is not "fair" and needs to be extended to tax the poor and the middle income. That's how we ended up with a regressive tax structure in the first place.

As long as we keep a Democratic majority in Olympia, the tax will stay where it is targeted.

Your fear, rodsreels5, may be real but it is misplaced.
