I got two bids to replace a chain link fence with a wood one. Both came in at a cost equal to 6 months of my mortgage! Are there any reliable budget fence company's in West Seattle?

Alki Fence has come in lowest so far for us, and many on the blog highly recommend them. That said, yes--about four mortgage payments.

  3. Yes, I realize some folks detest chain link fencing but over the long run, a chain link fence will likely last a lifetime or more and require ZERO maintenance.

Plastic privacy slats (available in many colors) will make it look quite attractive.

Feel free to click on my name and write me at my email if you would like to come see mine, since we are both in Arbor Heights.

  4. Any kind of fencing is expensive so you really need to think about what you need and want and how it goes with the house. There are lots of alternatives. Alki Fencing is good, All City Fencing is good. You might want to consult with a general contractor that does carpentry and this sort of thing. TJW Construction in West Seattle does some creative work: 938-2010. I've done cedar fencing as well as chain link with the privacy slats, both for different applications.

Have you thought about doing it yourself? It's the least expensive. I've built a lot of fences and would be happy to discuss the project with you. Some folks have hired me to "help" them. Meaning I show up with the expertise, all tools, if necessary my trailer to haul the materials that they purchase and we go to work.

  6. Michael,

I built my own fence, and if I do say, I built a pretty darn good one. I bought the "post on a pole" similar to what Alki uses from Alpine Fence in South Seattle. I also got a great deal on clean 1x4 cedar from Dunn, but most lumber is commodity priced, so ask for multiple quotes, very easy via email these days.

Thank you for all of your ideas!
To Tom: I have degenerative arthritis of the spine so I will not be building my own fence, but thanks for the offer of help.
Chain link fences may last forever, but ours is quite rusty and it only goes up 4 feet, we what a 6 foot privacy fence.
Because of the expense we are putting off a decision until next year. Maybe the economy will be better then?

  8. Michael,

Just a small tip. If the economy improves, the price of the fence (labor and materials) will go up, not down. Of course if your economy improves then it might be easier to pay for it!

  10. Homeowners: Beware of hiring unlicensed "contractors." You put yourself at risk.
