LarrydMemberToday, I got a 42 in a 30 ticket going down Admiral Blvd. Sadly, I got pulled over and THREE OTHER PEOPLE WERE GETTING A TICKET, TOO! Then, about 2:30 this afternoon, I see a cop driving down Admiral doing about 45. In the past, I have seen cops driving 50 miles per hour going to the bagel shop up the street. Also, I have spotted cops parked in a no parking area near Spiro’s Pizza.
Hey guys, here is the deal. IF the city really gives a rat’s ass about doing what is right, they need to do right. Today, I told the cop that wrote the ticket about what is forementioned. He told me that I should complain to the police department. I DID. I WAS IGNORED.
If the city would like to improve their tarnished image-maybe they should do the right thing. Smacking around homeless people or speed traps…you look bad when you look like a bully.
Years ago, I needed a policeman. I called the cops, one then stopped out. The policeman tried to talk me out of a report because he was too LAZY to do the paperwork.
I think our police state is really an ashamed unit. Like the little girls that protected us during the WTO riots.
I feel like I don’t need to just protect myself from the bad guys, but the bad cops that are too lazy to fill out a report-and even break their own laws.
You disgust me!

austinMemberI’m glad you were ticketed for breaking the law. Rates of taxation for habitual drivers should be higher than they are.

KBearParticipant42 mph in a 30 mph zone… That’s almost one and a half times the speed limit. Sounds like SPD are doing a great job.
February 17, 2011 at 7:01 am #717698
WSBKeymasterDid you miss the recent, much-commented reports about police targeting the hill? I drove it today and knowing it’s been a frequent spot for “emphasis” operations, I made sure not to go so much as a mile over the limit.
February 17, 2011 at 7:17 am #717699
dobroParticipantNot much sympathy here for an admitted lawbreaker. Some unsolicited advice-drive the speed limit and you won’t get any tickets.

JanSParticipantdobro…dontcha know it’s much easier to bitch?
February 17, 2011 at 3:27 pm #717701
redblackParticipantlarryd: maybe you should set up a sting; maybe “get jesse” can help you do it. while i don’t agree with the squeaky wheels about the speed limit being too low, i agree that the police should adhere to the law, as well – unless they have the lights and wailers on and/or are responding to an emergency.
February 17, 2011 at 5:23 pm #717702
cclarueMemberThere are two places in Ws that I go 30 not 31 or 32 that is one of them. I’m a pretty slow driver anyhow and have one speeding ticket in 24 years..that was enough for me. The speed limit is posted. The city clearly needs more money so go for it spd. Just please don’t cut our emergency services.

ZenguyParticipantCome on Larryd, this is supposed to be a “friendly” forum, not a throw slurs at others forum!
February 17, 2011 at 6:40 pm #717704
KBearParticipantGo get another ticket, Larry. You’ve earned it.
February 17, 2011 at 6:41 pm #717705
IrukandjiParticipantI guess a speeding ticket costs less than therapy.

WSBKeymasterDeleted, thanks for the flags.

WSBKeymasterPolice are now out with the full results of this week’s roundup. Third week in a row they’ve come out for an hour or so and bagged double-digits worth of alleged speeders:

datamuseParticipantWhat always gets me about discussions like these is the position that there’s something inevitable about the ticket, as though it were a tax or something.
Agree with the speed limit on Admiral or not, there’s an easy way to avoid getting ticketed for violating it.
February 17, 2011 at 10:11 pm #717709
dobroParticipantOne other thought- I’m sure that, since you disagree with the speed limit and find it unbearable to obey the law, you’ve broken that law more than once, perhaps several times. Why not consider your ticket a small price to pay for all those MPH you already got away with instead of p*ssing and moaning?
February 17, 2011 at 10:34 pm #717710
hooper1961Memberthe 30 MPH limit is not reasonable, thus reasonable people get ticketed. the FACT REMAINS THAT THE LIMIT WAS 35 MPH FOR YEARS AND THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT PROBLEM (less accidents than now due to City FANTASY ENGINEERING)
February 17, 2011 at 10:36 pm #717711
ZenguyParticipantStart a citizen’s iniative to change it.
February 17, 2011 at 10:37 pm #717712
lucky chickMemberQuite a leap of logic there! A couple of them, in fact.
I just want to see the people texting and yapping on phones get ticketed PLEEEEEAAAASSE SPD!
February 17, 2011 at 10:47 pm #717713
MBParticipantIt’s funny, I think I can count on my hands how many times I’ve actually seen people go 30 on Admiral Way in my 30 years of life…must be the people commenting here since apparently none of them would dare go over. Not defending Larryd and I do agree that the speed limit is the speed limit if you agree with it or not. There’s no reason to go around driving recklessly, but I’m also not willing to talk as if I’ve never gone over the limit myself because that would be a blatant lie. I’m not insinuating you all are lying, but I would bet you don’t all stay at 29 mph every time you drive that road either. Just sayin.
February 17, 2011 at 10:51 pm #717714
ZenguyParticipantI knew the speed limit, rarely went the exact speed limit (as I think it should be higher as well) but would never gripe about it if I did get a ticket.
February 17, 2011 at 11:00 pm #717715
datamuseParticipantAs it happens, I drive on Admiral very rarely cause I live waaaaaaay down near White Center (which, as Junction residents will tell you in re: the recent Zippy’s move discussion, is practically on the moon). I do try to keep it to 30, and that is difficult without riding the brakes (the Toyota Prius has a CVT, and the engine braking can only do so much). Highland Park Way, which I drive every day, is similar.
It seems to me that people are conflating a few things, though. To wit:
– the speed limit on Admiral is unreasonable (I’d agree with this and support raising the limit to 35)
– SPD drive like maniacs (have I seen them speeding without their lights/sirens? Yes, fairly often)
– the city has set the limit where it is to generate revenue (I have my doubts: for this to be a significant revenue source, they’d have to have enforcement going every single freakin’ day–bearing in mind that the police doing the enforcement are, you know, paid and a speeding ticket just isn’t THAT much–unless they’ve clocked you at 59 mph. Which I think we can all agree is an unreasonable speed for that road)
In other news, I like parentheses.

p. t.MemberFYI…as a native West Seattlite it’s Admiral WAY :) not boulevard
February 17, 2011 at 11:18 pm #717717
cjboffoliParticipantIf you consider the average commute distance of the critics of the existing speed limit on this piece of road (and the short distance of roadway being discussed here) even driving 50mph along that section of Admiral Way would not save any significant amount of time over driving 30mph. So all of the outrage seems based on drivers just wanting to FEEL like they’re getting to their destination faster.
Adding even just a bit of speed increases fuel use and, more significantly, increases the potential severity of accidents. Apparently, you’re statistically twice as likely to kill someone (car occupants and/or pedestrians, bicyclists) at 35mph than you are at 30mph.
A few miles per hour may not seem like much, but every added mile per hour increases the mass of your vehicle and the potential for damage and injury in a crash. Speed also reduces the time you have to react to an obstacle and requires more distance to brake your car.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates the annual economic cost of speed-related crashes in the US is more than $40 billion.
As I see it, the reasons to obey the posted speed limit more than outweigh the perceived advantages of speeding.
February 17, 2011 at 11:36 pm #717718
credmondParticipantChris, sometimes your logic is so damned fine that I want to copyright it. Thanks. The part about “mass kills” is unbelievable – one of the leaders in human-crash statistics is our own Harborview/King County Health human injury statistics team. They’ve consistently shown that high-fender vehicles like SUVs and speeds over 30 mph are basically lethal under all but the most unusual circumstances. Hard to believe until you see the analysis and then it’s just plain shocking.
February 17, 2011 at 11:56 pm #717719
waynsterParticipantAdmiral way has and always will be a money maker for the citys coffers its easy to fly up the hill and fly down it. The spd traffic unit has enjoyed it and always will slow down or pay!
