Is there a West Seattle business (or resource) that amazes and amuses you and you swear you'll go there again or soon? Do It Now!

I love comic books. I've "always meant" to stop by the comic book store, and now it's closing. I love local indie movie theaters (even if the seats aren't always optimal and the velvet is musty). I don't always go to the Admiral. I vow to go there BEFORE I have to start signing petitions to keep it open.

The new fabric store on California is wonderful! I mean(t) to go back -- I'll walk there this afternoon, as soon as I stop typing this message. I'm the gimpy old broad with the purple cane and I will get there eventually.

Sometimes I get annoyed at what I think is the provincialism of the WSB and its forum members, but I far prefer that to the "would of could of should of -- oops, it's gone" phemonema.

I vow to pull over and walk in to every intriguing store front I see in WS -- until, of course, I can no longer afford it. Then I'll be the broad with the purple cane and the radio voice, standing on the corner asking for spare shopping change.

Seriously, support local bidnesses because it's fun!

  2. AMEN.

Just on an unofficial note it feels like we are reporting more independent business closures and more chain (out of area chain - something like Wing Dome doesn't count) openings lately.

Yes, I know chain employees are our friends and neighbors too. But it's the indies (WSB included, and our wing of the business also is under siege by corporate wannabes) that add spice to life.

This past weekend I made the rounds to Easy Street Records, The Stop n' Shop, Funky Janes, Many Moons Trading Co., The Discovery Shop & Suite Arrangements! I don't have a lot of $ to spend on shopping these days... but find I can stretch it pretty far and have fun doing it within a mile (or so) of my doorstep!
    .
Some folks think they can't afford to shop at small/independent businesses ... I ask 'how can we afford not to'?

  4. I'm still so PO'ed from the Bohemian closing that I could spit! Thanks for the reminder, Charla, I couldn't agree more.

  7. Great reminder, charlabob. I'm going to swing by Kokoros in the Morgan Junction for some warm Greek food and then maybe stop in at the Beverage Place to top it off with a cold beer before walking home in the snow this evening. I've been putting it off for awhile, but your great post reminded me that it's time to support small local businesses! Thanks!

Slow clap for Charlabob. It seems that often, when businesses close, folks are quick to say they will miss it but don't remember the last time they visited. I'm guilty too.

I am thinking the new place Locol may be our new Bohemian, although not walkable for us Admiral folk.

I drove by Locol on my way home tonight. It was lovely to see the place packed. Now I just need to schedule a babysitter.....

Sitting in Hotwire, drinking my awesome Americano while using the computer. When done, heading up to the fabric store to check it out; stopping by Zatz A Better Bagel to pick up the best bagels in Seattle; then Muttley Crew Cuts to drop off a flyer. Going next to PCC, then Seattle Fish to get some righteous salmon for my cats (I don't eat animal flesh). Zamboanga for some 'business casual' clothing for work and of course Funky Jane's (like the other clothing stores too).

Can get all my shopping done in a small area. Cool. Saves on my time. Saves on gas. Supports our local economy. Supports my friends that own some of these businesses. Winner!

One of my favorite things about local indie funky clothing stores is that they don't glare at me because I don't fit their demographic (to say the least) and I have found great bags, scarves, jewelry and gifts. Sometimes hip stores act as if my presence will drive away their demographic --- the two places I've felt welcome are Melrose Avenue in LA and anyplace in WS. Maybe I just remind them of their grandmothers. :-)

  17. We had been saying for months that we needed to go back to Phoenicia again, and then...
To our shame, we still haven't been back since the reopening. We should do that asap. But we will always regret not spending more time with Hussein when we could have.

Don't forget -- this is the Weekend Of Good Movies(tm) at the Admiral. We've seen "Looking for Superman" and we're going to see "Burlesque" tonight.

Support don't mourn (your local businesses).
