   I work for a local auto supply store. Since we are just now getting our shipments of snow chains it prompted me to offer this suggestion...please don't wait until the last minute after you hear a snow or ice storm is coming to look for them. Last winter, customers were getting mad at US for being sold out a day before we got hit. Please don't rely on the "oh Seattle only gets snow and ice once every 10 years" thing or that the city will have every street you use cleared as soon as a flake falls. If you can spare about $30 - $75 in the next month or 2, be proactive and go buy your chains now and leave them in your trunk. All you need to do is supply any auto store with your tire size which is a series of letters and numbers on the sidewall of your tire, example: 225/50R16. The year, make and model of your car will generally not help since the catalogs and systems we go by don't list it that way. And finally, if you do decide to wait, please don't take it out on the employees. They usually are not in charge of making sure no other customers buy up all the chains you need.    for you, vincent, useful would be something added to the conversation that actually ADDS to the conversation - ;-) ..

   for those who have early model Saturns, 95-96, etc. they do not use chains, they use spike thingies - can't remember the name - because the car rides so low - but I understand that they work very well

   there's no "ad" here - he never mentioned the name of the auto supply store. I think it's a useful PSA - a lot of people were caught unaware/unprepared last winter. Thanks for the heads up, Lowery.

   I've got some snow chains that'll fit a 4runner and they're free....the catch...you'll have to come down here to San Diego to pick 'em up :)

    They should be a standard piece of equipment that comes with the car like a jack and lug nut wrench. You almost never use them but when you need them....

    Jan,

    The day I left to drive down here it rained until I hit Ashland:) The next day your heat wave hit!! I pop in here now and again to make sure you're all behaving:)
