    Hi all,

I just wanted to post a note to West Seattle drivers. I am a frequent walker / biker/ runner, and as the weather turns funky, I wanted to remind our drivers of some safety tips to keep us both safe and free from harm.

    1. Turn on your lights: during our dark grey days, it can be hard to see cars, especially grey and silver ones. Please turn on your lights if it isn't sunny, to make it easier for us to see each other.

    2. Be aware of non-drivers: look for runners and bikers as you drive, turn, and go around the many round-abouts in WS. We will try to be as visible as we can, but as the faster object, you need to make an effort to be extra aware that we might be nearby.

    3. Be courteous of non-drivers: don't honk at, crowd, or sling profanity at runners and bicyclists (this just happened to me, and it can be scary to have someone yelling at you in a car when you're on foot).

Thanks, all! Here's to happy, co-existing commuters!

  2. And another note:
Slow down in those school zones. Parked in front of Madison middle school yesterday I saw a white SUV go by at about 45 and blow the yield sign at high speed.
This was at 2:13 and some of the kids had gotten out a few min early and were using the crosswalks.

The volume of traffic on 35th and other arterials seems to be bringing out the demented while the viaduct is closed too.

  3. And I was just noting in another thread that maybe we do need signs reminding people to turn their headlights on!

As a friend put it, my bike is "blinky as a tweaker in a smoky room" so hopefully everyone can see me!

  4. Also, a friendly reminder to bikers (especially on gray, dreary mornings) it may save your life to wear something brighter than black and gray from head to toe. I take West Marginal to the bridge every morning and was shocked on Monday at the 4 bicycle riders (not together) in a row I saw wearing all dark clothing with little or no reflectiveness. Most bicyclers I see DO wear visible clothing and have blinking lights, so I was surprised to see so many that morning who just blended right in with the gray ugliness. Reminded me how hard you have to look to see these guys sometimes and I'm someone that DOES pay attention while driving. Imagine all the jack nobs who don't when you put your gray jacket on on a rainy morning! I really don't want to read about a bicycle rider getting slammed by a semi on West Marginal...
