Imagine if you could go from West Seattle to Downtown in only about 90 seconds. In the manner of a slot car:

I wanna see the bumper mount

Awesome! Really a fun ride.... and the sounds, soooo sweet.

Very creative! I'd like to see the bumper mount too. What kind of camera did you use?
I see we share the same preference for REI parking lot aisle :).

This footage was shot with a GoHero Pro HD in full 1080p. Actually, the raw footage looks a lot better as I've applied sort of a cartoon filter in this iteration. There's also a decline in quality when you speed it up 900%.
The camera's enclosure makes it waterproof and shockproof. Their website actually has some cool surfboard footage though I can't say I've had much of an opportunity to use it in and around water. The mounting systems are modular so they're expandable and nicely adaptable. The camera shoots stills as well as video (including 60 fps native for beautiful-looking slow-mo).
This video was made with a lower bumper mount. But I've also shot on-car footage with their very strong suction cup mount.

Very cool thanks Christopher

I have wanted one of those for a while. It was intended for motorcyclists to mount on helmet or tank. They sell it for $199 thru Aerostitch website. drooooool.

ToddinWestwood: It looks like they have a couple other compact video cameras there. But I think the HD video models are more than $199.

Cool footage, funny sound fx. Time for you to get a kayak to strap that thing to the front of eh.

austin: Believe it or not but that's the original audio. Speeding up the footage generated this sort of electric, THX-1138-esque engine sound which reminded me of slot cars, hence the title.
Some kayak footage would be very cool. I tried without success to get one of the West Seattle-based members of the Rat City Roller girls to wear one of the cameras on her helmet during one of the meets but she made it sound like that would require Olympic Committee level approvals before it could happen. These types of cameras are so tough and small they can really go anywhere.

Are you kidding! That is so neat, about the audio. I found myself wondering how did he do that? It would have required a minute sitting there in software I feel like. That's excellent that it turned out that way.
I'll take you kayaking, or will take your camera just about anyplace solo. I won't even make you sign official papers or anything. Our honorable Host has my info.

austin: Thanks! I might just take you up on that. I love kayaking and don't get out on the water nearly enough.
Speaking of kayaking, I have to laugh at some of the elaborate and expensive waterproof camera housings I've used in the past for watercraft photography, most of which didn't yield very impressive results. I'm going to be paddling in Vietnam and Burma in a couple of months and the mini cam will definitely be along for the ride.

That sounds like quite the trip, that little camera should serve you well. It looks like a lot of fun that my little pentax could not have reproduced.

Yes, very cool Christopher!
I, too, am surprised to find out that's the original audio. I was picturing you at your computer painstakingly matching some appropriate SFX to your vid! :-D

Mike: Did you manage to watch that HD video over dial-up? If so you are to be commended for your patience and tenacity :-)

CJ-Did you ask the Rat City Rollers to wear it during practice? I bet they can wear it then.
Happy kayaking in Vietnam and Burma.

Celeste: A good idea. Yes, I did consider that. But I ended up passing on the assignment and it was covered by another photographer. So it became sort of a moot issue.
However, I did lend one of my mini-cams to my pal (and former Real World cast member) Kat who is a rollergirl down in Tacoma. And she shot some practice footage. But her helmet-mount footage was actually a bit shaky. It was also not that bright in the practice arena so the footage looked murky. So now I'm thinking a belt-level or skate-mounted camera might produce better footage.

Yeah, the HD is $299. Its a great vid.
How do you like the camera? is it easy to use? and most of all, do you trust the mount?
thanks, its going on my birthday list.

Very nice. I almost got sick watching it full screen. I've always wanted to take a video driving on the viaduct. Only wish you paused a few seconds looking back at the city.

Really fun, Christopher! Thanks for sharing this. Enjoyed the discussion about the cameras as well. The whole field of digital photography now is so amazingly awesome. Thought I recognized the REI parking lot also, but then I thought I must be crazy.

Christopher, I didn't click on the HD link originally, but if it defaults that way, maybe I did view it that way. (Just clicked the vid link again, then clicked the HD link, and it responded "HD is Off", which suggests to me that it must default load HD).
But yeah, I just started it loading last night when I went to bed, then watched it this morning. Tried to view it full screen, but ended up having to go back to the default view.
I was trying to keep up with the route and destination, but so many things have changed in the over twelve years that I would go Downtown on a regular basis, that many of the old "landmarks" I would rely on are gone. But, I was wondering if that was "new" REI, (thanks cathyw for the confirmation!), which I've actually been to only once, probably within a couple years or so after its opening.
