4 reasons Abraham Lincoln wouldn't win the GOP nomination in 2012

  1. excerpt:
Yes, Abraham Lincoln was America's first Republican president, and, yes, the GOP proudly calls itself the Party of Lincoln. But Bradley University sociology chair Jackie Hogan wonders: Could Lincoln win his party’s nomination in 2012? Here Hogan considers his stance on some of the hot-button issues in the Republican primary race.

    1) Lincoln invented income tax
    2) He didn't advertise his faith
    3) He wasn't a looker
    4) He tended toward moderate positions and long, complex arguments

Text of Lincoln's Cooper Union Address which pretty much proves he would have been excoriated by the pundits for "nuance" and "too much detail"

  2. Thanks, Ken.

In this age of slick media blitzes and one-word campgain slogans, Lincoln might not have gotten himself on the Democratic ticket either.

    Lincoln's 1860 campaign slogan:

     "Vote yourself a farm."

    The 1864 slogan:

"Don't swap horses in the middle of a stream."

Yea... wouldn't be a Democrat for sure!

And his neighbors didn't have to send him to"early childhood" education...that family values thing eh?

And he worked for a living..nothing was beneath him. splitting rails, tried retail, farmed, and read, read, read...

Father and mother... too. We call that a nuclear family.

The ultimate social safety net... gumption, hard work, character.... no he would never be a Democratic nominee.

And in his cabinet... he had all manner of every political stripe... no "lock the doors, sell perks and exclude the opposition" No, pass the bill then you can read it.

No Democrat would elect a man "A majority held in restraint by constitutional checks and limitations, and always changing easily with deliberate changes of popular opinions and sentiments, is the only true sovereign of a free people"

  5. kootch...

which of the current republican candidates can meet the criteria you just set for Lincoln?

especially that part about being willing to actually work for a living.. no job beneath him?

    6. he's dead.

although that doesn't seem to be stopping at least half of the current GOP field.

  7. Does being dead exclude him as a candidate? Hmmm. I wonder if a dead president would be allowed? We could have the Dead Presidents of the United States Of America play the Inauguration Ball. Of course the opening act would have to be the Zombies.

  8. Yeah, y'know, that damn Obama sure is a sorry excuse for a man with family values! Married to the same woman for what will be twenty years in October. Two, apparently well-adjusted, and well loved by both parents daughters, that were born legitimately. As far as we know has been faithful to his wife.

Yep, even though some of his political moves seem almost Republican, there's no way he could actually run on the Republican ticket. Not with such a lack of character, morals, and family values!

  9. and then there's us libtards, Mike...never saw an honest days work in all our lives...boy, those conservative Repubs that have their hands in my private parts and business sure are setting examples, huh...

  10. To be honest, I never would have dreamed of starting a thread like this.

I seem to remember Mr. Obama invoking Lincoln too. Well gee, future President Santorum lived in Illinois too for a time.

There have been some great leaders from both parties.

Honestly, I could go into some big negatives but not tonight.

I know MIWS....utterly shocking. Why JoN you know that would be Mitt. Good heavens, the man is taking a pay cut for national service. But if quotes the Gospel of Luke to justify higher taxes, I will puke. He might have just as well come out and said what was on his mind... render unto Ceasar everything...
